JEMR1234 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Datsun 510

I've just managed to get hold of a 1800 single overhead cam 510 datsun (1969) which I intend to turn into a race car. The idea is to circuit race it but try and keep it road registered with the view to road rally it occasionally.
Is there anyone out there that can advise me on:
Engine build, where to get bits
suspension, best set ups etc
any other info that might be of use.
I'm based in the UK (Kent)
Jon

There was a guy running one in Top Hat racing a couple of years ago, you can see it at the end of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJrX3Bhy338

Here's photos I took, but I can't find the race programme or online entry list to say whose it was.

If any parts are anything like those on the 240 "Z" series then Fourways at Borough Green are on your doorstep ( but I expect you know that ! )

I used to run one of these in Australian Group Nc Historic Touring Cars. It was very slow in a striaght line, worst power to weight ratio in the class, but it was extraordinarily reliable, (several years without a DNF) and it had phenomenal corner speed.

The best engine we ever had made 125hp at the flywheel and the car weighed 950kg. I ran the standard Datsun 4 speed and standard clutch and an R-180 diff from a Datsun 240K. The standard R-160 diff is smaller and much lighter, but nowhere near as strong. We never had a driveline failure in the eight years i ran the car.

The front struts and front brakes also came from a Datsun 240K, i believe they were common to the Datsun 810. The front brakes were two spot calipers on a 10" solid rotor. The rear brakes were 9" drums.

We lowered the ride height 2.5" and ran 4 degrees neg camber on the front and the rear had 2.5 degrees. I can't remember the spring rates. We ran Koni adjustable shocks and set them pretty firm, expect we had to soften the rears on bumpier circuits.

We used 13" x 7" alloys and 205/60/13 Yokohama Advan R compound radials.

I don't have any pics on this computer, but many years ago i posted a few on this forum.

I ran the standard carb & manifolds initially and then I managed to pick up a pair of 40mm side draught Dellortoes and manifold cheaply and the guy threw in some ratty second hand extractors for free.

Oh wow, I'm on youtube!!

Mine is the blue car at Mallory Park, when I moved from Australia to the UK in October 2007 I took my Datsun 1600 with me intending to do some historic racing and rallying. Circumstances restricted my outings to 1 Top Hat race day and and 2 track days at Brands Hatch, what an incredible circuit (BH) and Mallory was lots of fun as well, both wonderful experiences...

I sold the car at the end of last year, pm me if you want further details...

Mine was a 2litre on twin 45 webbers, was a very well put together car and ran 178hp on the dyno with potential for me, fantastic car that's lots of fun... I miss that car!

It sounded beautiful that day at Mallory, a proper screamer and the 510 would make a very formidable weapon against Escort Mk1's and Dolomite Sprints in Classic Touring Cars.
