Gronholm loses Cyprus win

The FIA has overturned Gronholm's Cyprus win, water pump irregularities, http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/moto...ly/3750589.stm

Doesn't seem to have been a performance advantage but rules is rules

So the win goes to Loeb then - didn't Citroen have the same part ? Wasn't it just a case of Peugeot didn't have it homologated ?

Stupid really because citroen and peugeot are the one company, if you have ever been to france (especialy if your going to charles de gaul on the bus) you will see they both come out of the same factory.

Maybe the water pump put waterthrew the engine faster than it should resulting in cooler engine temperatures resulting in better preformance (I doubt it, but just have an hack at it hehe )

Peugeot had a plastic impellor whilst Citroen had an aluminium one.

Guess which one was homologated.

Tough but fair.

Is it me, or is that something the Peugeot team really should have thought of?

1200Datto27 has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Especially as Colin McRae lost the Monte win a few years ago for EXACTLY the same reason.

Provera and the FIA "disagree" over Cyprus DSQs

Peugeot boss slams FIA decision
Quote:
Peugeot's motorsport chief Corrado Provera has launched a stinging rebuke of the FIA's decision to exclude his driver Marcus Gronholm from the Cyprus Rally last month, citing that 'the shame cast upon Peugeot is unacceptable'.
The FIA response
Quote:
Rather than making unfounded and inflammatory comments regarding the consequences of using an illegal component, Mr Provera should address the management failings which allowed such a component to be used in the first instance.
Will this one run and run?

Most probably, the fia have gotten an bit too strickt with their rules, the number of disqualifications because of technical issues has doubled or even trippled since 2001

After the TTE turbo issue, I think that the FIA has been looking very closely at rally cars in general. There was a driver who won a round of the ARC, but was diqualified post event for having an illegal modification to the brake booster. The modification that had been made is one that Prodrive has been doing to all it's group N cars, where a solid pipe is inserted into the deactivated brake booster to retain brake pedal feel, and has been used for a number of years, by different teams/manufacturers.

So a French company has been done wrong by an infringement could be seen as a questionable technical advantage...maybe now they know who the world felt when the Monte Carlo Minis were disqualified!!

Apparently the plastic part was actually machined down to fit the pump - suggesting there's more to it than a simple mistake.
