When your Audi, nothing has to make sense. Just go with it ]

no but actually they are the older spare tubs. One is a used test chassis and the other was the spare for Silverstone.

This story seems to hint that both tubs have been repaired:

https://www.facebook.com/sportaudi

Also, there was an Autosport article a couple of days ago that hinted that Audi would get at least one tub back in time to use it as a spare for Spa.

Whether they got one or both tubs back, they'll only be used as spares at Spa, because of them having built up new cars as a precaution against not getting repairs done in time.

Perhaps the damage wasn't so bad, if any at all besides *noses* ... perhaps there were more tubs in reserve ( only 3 sounds like drop off by the end of season) ... perhaps information war also applies here (fool everybody including the toxic dictator FIA/ACO)

67.3a * 1.0982^3 /10*720b + 6pi/62c = 3.000982 tubs.

Time for a lie down.

I think you have your formula wrong, Wikipedia has it listed as:
67.3a * 1.0983^3 /10*720b + 6pi/62c = 3.000982 tubs

Yet another interesting article by motorsport-total.com giving further information about how Audi cope with the fuel restriction requirements.

This article appears to confirm that Audi have devised an automatic system that may kick in if the driver is potentially exceeding the fuel consumption limits. That may explain the sudden deceleration of Di Grassi's car at the end of the first lap (was it the first lap BTW ?) during the 6h race of Silverstone.

This article suggests that, in the case of Porsche and Toyota, the driver is in full control and that no similar automatic system exists, but that would have to be confirmed I guess.

It is once again mentioned that Audi have been simulating such fuel restriction requirements as early as the second half of the FIA-WEC season.

End of lap 1/start of lap 2, and #8 Toyota and a Porsche had to flick either side in avoidance.

Question: does the backlit LED strips in the R18's headlights change color under differing light conditions? Photos of the Monza test show them going back and forth between violet, green, red, yellow, orange and very light blue/white.

It changes very quickly. In my photo's of the test at Paul Ricard the lights are continually changing.

We get a chance to see details of the Audi R18 front-end with half of the front train disassembled:

These bulges at the trailing end of the mandatory cut-outs on the inner side of the front wheel fenders are quite interesting. These appear to orient and feed air directly behind the front wheels as this was already apparent on the studio shot and the Monza pictures:

I wonder how much of an influence this may have in terms of aerodynamic efficiency, especially compared to the alternate solution with the mandatory cut-outs on top of the fenders.

Is it because of the shot angle that the LM-spec nose is a bit wider than the #1 Audi? Since the mandatory front wheel cutout inside the side pod leads to the absence of a second pair of winglet on both sides of the nose.

The "flaps" on the sides of the nosebox are closed off, while in the sprint version they're opened up.

Also, I wondered what the black dots were near the Michelin stickers on the nose, and according to the panullo blog, they're screws to adjust the angle of the front flaps. It seems that while Audi aren't using the adjustable front diffuser flap the same way as on the early R15, the front fender/nose box flaps, at least the front ones, are adjustable.

This LM R18 reminds me of the Peugeot 905 evo2, AKA "Supercopter"

And I still can't tell if the R18 is running torsion bar springs, though considering the nose packaging, they likely are, though changing them can't be the easiest thing considering said packaging.

That doesnt seem like a low drag solution with openings on the inside of the front fenders. Feeding air to the front tire exits maybe reduces lift in that area?

Evidently, both cut-out options have different impacts in terms of aero efficiency and it would be very interesting to have some comparative analysis between the two concepts (that's for the guys at racecar-engineering ).

There must be a good reason for Audi to switch to the inner-located cut-out option on their LM-spec package and the bulges at the trailing end of the cut-outs, although counter-intuitive as they increase the front face area, may be an attempt to exploit the cut-outs to achieve some aero benefit.

Could this help to tidy the air flow behind the front wheels and thereby improve the efficiency of the rear wing ?

I was thinking of relieving the air pressure from the standard holes is a reason for flowing it into an exit. But seems more draggy than a top of the fender hole. Possibly benefits for either position!
