KERS, could it be used to extend range?
I have watched all the GP's so far this season and it seems at certain tracks KERS is more useful than others so it occured to me when they are racing at tracks where KERS would be less useful would it not be possible to switch the technology back to its origins, i.e. fuel economy and extend the distance the cars can run between refueling and if so would there be any advantage doing so?

With next years banning of refueling, it would make a lot of sense.

Should be interesting maybe those that invest in the development this year will find it pays dividends in 2010.

The last I heard about KERS was that FOTA (or maybe just Flavio) wanted it banned for 2010.
I would also assume that if KERS gave you an advantage with a faster lap time, then it would also save fuel if you chose to use it not to get a faster lap time? |

Well if they could not refuel and they had to have a limit on tank size and they had to use the KERS to extend usable range this would be a very good way to get F1 seen in a greener light which can be no bad thing. It would also be putting useful research back into the car industry. Maybe this was the original thinking behind all this.

Could easily be yes. Introduce the tech year 1, so it can be developed. Make it "required" by allowing teams with it to put less fuel in the car but still reach the end of the race. We all know how important even 10kg of fuel is in Q3.
