Amaroo was a complex for Sydney car clubs. It had a hillclimb and a short dirt circuit and was used for closed "rallies" during the time rallies were banned on public roads. The loss of the full circuit most probably affected clubs less than the loss of the hillclimb and short circuit, these never having been replaced.

It was always a great track to watch on TV and provided some fantastic racing.
I remember watching the last (or one of the last) race meets on TV (98ish). There was a brilliant dual in the historics between a Falcon Sprint (or Fairlane??) and a Mini Cooper.

Was an even better circuit to drive on......I preferred it to even the GP Circuit at Oran..... flying fulltilt over the crest of Bitupave was amazing.... as was flat out in 4th heading towards the concrete wall at Stop-Go!

I used to go to the track quite regularly especially for the Castrol 6 Hour bike races they were brilliant - I think the last time I went was to see John Bowe race that Ferrari round there - then they shut up shop and yes its depressing to see a bunch of little boxes dominating the area. I have some racing shots somewhere of the bike and car races maybe I should try digging them out and post

They used to have a great event for club racers called The Motathalon.

On the Saturday they ran the Dirt Circuit and a Motorkhana, Sunday was the Main Race Circuit and the Hillclimb.

Your car had to certainly be an all rounder. I remember in 1980 or 81 the full blown rally cars being ****ed off with me when I beat them on the dirt circuit with a slick shod Sports Sedan. They laughed when I was trying to negotiate reversing parts in the motorkhana with a locked diff.

Oh the memories!!!

Part of it anyway, good memories. What it didn't show was the downhill run into the hillclimb, short sharp and violent. It sort of had these two level bits that got in the way of a quick time and caused the car to break things if the driver wasn't careful. what brought about the rally course was that rallies had a ban put on them because we caused too many problems around the roads that were constantly used, they are suburbs now. A meeting was held to kick CAMS backside at Leichhardt town hall in Norton Street just down from the ARDC and about 3000 people turned up ready to hang anyone they could find. Yes Amaroo was really the centre of car club activity in those days and will never be replaced.
