Why are the onboard cameras rubbish pic quality
Is it me or are the onboard cameras used in A1 poor quality. These cameras provide a distinctive aspect of racing and as such need to work regardless of speed and vibration. If F1 cameras can do it, why cant A1. And also, due to the inexperienced driving which is quite apparent regularily, maybe they should think about investing in that GPS Computer graphics program that is seen on WRC coverage to show the veiwers how and why the driver crashed or spun. I think that would be interesting to see.

The camera positions on an A1GP car are different from F1 Cars. The main camera position on an F1 car is in a fairing on top of the rollcage, by it's very nature one of the most stable (supported) points on a single seater.
A1GP in trying to offer different angles have opted for camera positions that may not be as stable, for example attached to the upright of the rear wing, which is being buffeted by the airflow off the side pod and rear tyre. The actual broadcast technology is the same, in that the signal from the car is bounced off an orbiting helicopter back to a ground station and into the TV trucks. |

I actually like them too, theres lots of different shots available and are different to F1 so its interesting. I like the lower quality too, just seems to feel right to me for some reason.

I agree that positioning the cameras in various locations so you can SEE the car working is great but its an annoyance that the cameras are inconsistant when delivering pictures

The simple reason that the cameras look so poor is that they are not allocating enough bandwidth to each link, so the pictures are overcompressed and there is insufficient error correction.

It's good to see a series like A1 experimenting with camera angles and they have certainly managed to find some interesting ones on the cars, but sadly it's a worthless effort when the feed from the car barely lasts 3 seconds before breaking up in most cases.
This is a problem that should have been sorted out within the first few races as it really brings down the overall quality of the race broadcast. |
