1957 Connaught auction: info required !!!

I've posted nearly the same subject in Atlas TNF here: http://www.atlasf1.com/bb/showthread...threadid=23597

I've already read some articles about the final auction of the remaining Connaughts in September 1957. Unluckily my sources (in French) were not very precise.

I know that the ex-Piero Scotti (B6) was not sold. The C-type was not sold too, as the salesmen required a minimum of 3.000 and no one went above 500 .

Bernie Ecclestone bought 2 cars, including B3 for 2.100 and an other for 1.950 .

In fact, my main source didn't quote the name of Bernie and called him Mr Underworld. The other buyers would be (according this source) the firm Auto-Speed, from Liverpool who acquired a B-type for 1.850 , Brian Combes (who had B2 for 1.725 ) and Brian Naylor (who gave 1.600 for another B-type).

An other source quote the name of John Young, an ex-Connaught driver.

Some spare materials, including chassis and engines were also put up in auction...

I would be very interested to read the autosport report about the sale (or any articles written about it just after the auction).

The figures may be wrong as it came from only one source.

I just add an open question. Do you know the present owners (+ contact) of those cars, all Connaughts in fact ?

What date was it? I've just acquired a number of 1957 issues of Motor Racing, they might reveal something...

My source says: 17-18-19 September 1957. I'm not sure it was not just one day.

Ray: I've seen a quote from Doug Nye which says the auction took place in October, not September. I don't know if he's right though ...

The report of the auction in the newspaper "Les Sports" is dated from September 25th, 1957. So the date(s) of the auction seem(s) to be correct.

As I said in TNF, the figures of the prices are right. Let's sum up the results of the auction:

B2 was sold to John Coombs (and John Young) for 1,725 ,
B3 was sold to Bernard Ecclestone for 2,100 ,
B4 was sold to Auto-Speed from Liverpool (Ken Flint?) for 1,850 ,
B5 was sold to Brian Naylor (and driven later by Geoff Richardson) for 1,600 ,
B6 was not sold,
B7 was sold to Bernard Ecclestone for 1,950 ,
C8 was not sold.

B4 was the ex-Rob Walker car also put up for auction.

What about the remains of B1 (the car written of by Les Leston at Syracuse in 1956), what about some spare materials, what about some A-type cars, for example the "AX" car which was recently put up for auction (but not sold) by H & H Classic Car Auction ?

The initial report in "Les Sports" added some details, B3 was the "lot n290", B2 = "lot n291", B7 ="n287", B1 (yes B1) = "n270"...

And last for now, do you know who were the organisers of the 1957 auction ?

In the January 2001 issue of Classic & Sports Car magazine (Page 30, Simon Taylor's Full Throttle column), there is a cutting of an advertisement for the auction.

This has the date of the auction as Tuesday 17th-Thursday 19th September 1957, at 11am each day.

Being offered for sale were 6 Connaught Formula 1 Grand Prix Racing Cars (Fully prepare for Grand Prix racing and with Full Racing Equipment), Spare Parts, Transporter Vehicles, Valuable Plant and Equipment of Machine Shop, Test House, Racing Shop, Drawing Office, Furniture, Fixtures, Fittings and Raw Material.

The auction was organised by Goddard, Davison & Smith, Limited.
