Single-Car teams

It's a shame F1 doesn't allow single-car teams, but I'm sure there is some 'pigs-at-a-trough' reason why it isn't allowed in modern F1.
Is F1 the only motorsport discipline worldwide, professional or amatuer, that forbids single-car entries?

no, series like gp2, formula renault 3.5 and iirc, any series with limited entries tends to not approve single car entries or penalise any non-attendance.

it's more of a cost/common sense thing - it's spectacularly expensive to run one car, even in a one-make formula. you need precious few extra employees to run two, and obviously you can pretty much halve things like logistics costs, garage setup, etc.

True, but there are 3 (I think 3 anyway) teams running one car at the moment though.
Will they be penalised? And will Carlin for missing rounds completely?

no, the series are taking a realistic approach and not penalising them this season.

wec for example still penalise tens of thousands of euros for registered entries missing rounds, in addition to the cost for the entry for the full season. many series discourage all but those funded for a full season because it keeps the grid numbers stable amongst other things. in better economic times and when series are booming series can pick and choose which entries they accept. but obviously in times like we're seeing now with relatively few youngsters progressing through the ladder (a delayed consequence of the economic flap a few years ago) organisers will need to take an increasingly pragmatic approach to it all.
