New Control Tyre
The tyre tender for the new V8Supercar Tyre has been run and won, and to a few peoples suprise the new Tyre is DUNLOP!

AVESCO ANNOUNCE THREE YEAR TYRE DEAL AVESCO, governing body of V8 Supercars announced today South Pacific Tyres (Dunlop) had secured a three-year contract to be the sole supplier of control tyres to Australia's premier motorsport category from 2002. South Pacific Tyres successfully won the much sought after contract at tender despite strong competition from Bridgestone Australia Limited. Bridgestone have held the contract with V8 Supercars since the inception of control tyres in 1999. AVESCO CEO Wayne Cattach said that while Bridgestone and V8 Supercars have enjoyed an extremely successful relationship over the past three years the change in tyre manufactures for 2002 indicates the growing competitiveness amongst companies wishing to become involved with high profile sports such as V8 Supercars. "AVESCO has enjoyed a very successful relationship with Bridgestone over the past three years and while both companies presented extremely attractive proposals we had to go with the best possible offer for the category and our teams. "V8 Supercars are fast becoming one of the most valuable sporting properties and more and more high profile companies are wanting to be involved with Australia's premier motorsport category. "V8 Supercars offer Dunlop the perfect cornerstone for their ongoing marketing direction which reflects their long standing tradition of high performance tyres and successful involvement in motorsport worldwide," he said. "We are delighted with AVESCO's decision, and we look forward to a long-term association between the Dunlop brand and Australia's premier motor racing category," says South Pacific Tyres Managing Director Rob McEniry. Wow, there's a turn up for the books...put that in your pipe everybody!
Who do you think will be the first to come to terms with the new rubber? Apparently Bridgestone made a loss in Australia last year, and from some rough figures that I've heard floating around, the tyre deal in V8s was costing them at least $1.5M pa....I wonder how long we will see their ads on TV? And what is Mort going to do? |

I really like the name Mort...I don't know why
 Another thing- I doubt that those runners who used to run Dunlops would have any advantage....although remember when Larry built his first car that ran on Bridgestone's, that it had twice the roll cage of the 'Dunlop' cars? Will everyone be removing their Larry cars now? |

I cannot remember who I told, but "I told you so" to whoever I did. I said, after Bridgestone won the previous contract that Dunlop would get the next one.

Man, this will stir things up!! Most top teams i spose will rebuild their cars to suit the new tyre, and what about all the small teams, how are they going to manage this obsticle.

Maybe not only were the stiffer chassis being built developed to suit the Bridgstone control tyre but this could also have just been a step up in the professional way these cars are built.
The more responsive to set up changes stiffer chassis should suit whatever tyre is put on them shouldn't they ? |

This is coming from a completely uninformed Crash Test, but I would speculate that the current control tyre would be fairly hard, and Dunlop would be silly to introduce a 'soft' tyre....so construction of the cars probably should not be a problem.

As for the likes of dick and lp privately testing these tyres, simply not posible with current tyre contract restrictions. Only way is for Dunlop to have a open test day which has never happened and it would not be for just previous Dunlop users.

Brad Jones has stated on the V8X Website they he thinks the new control tyre will force everyone to start from scratch next year in regards to set up and data thus levelling the playing field.
I think the same front running teams will still be up the front because they have the resources to test and collect the maximum amount of data to get the best possible performance out of the new tyre quicker than any body else. |

Dick and Larry have been testing for them huh?
Excellent. One could say , " Who's a Clever Dick then" couldn't one?  It will be interesting to see just how much of an advantage this will be early next year. |
