20 years since infamous 1999 Calder ATCC round

The current edition of Auto Action in its Archive section that looks back at old editions of AA makes mention that it is 20 years since the infamous Demolition Derby 1999 Calder Park Touring Car round.

First we had Justin Cotter do this late on Saturday afternoon resulting in a helicopter ride to hospital and a long recovery.

Next day we had this happen.

and of course the one everyone remembers.

All in all an eventful weekend for the emergency services side of the event.

Great comradery shown when fellow competitors stopped to check on Lowndes.

And of course not forgetting Larry too, taking time to check the undercarriage was all okay.

I seem to remember the Lowndes being shown on Martin Brundle’s great escapes

Gee whiz. That run to the first corner looks something of a design fault. I haven't seen the FFord one before, that looked horrible.

It's quite wide down through there as it is also used as a drag strip, so plenty of room to get a number of cars jockeying for position across the width of the track. Quicker than it looks on the footage too.

Area off the track on the left was compromised with the "joiner" tarmac section over to the thunder dome (built to enable races to use both the dome and the regular circuit as part of each lap) - in following years that area was dealt with differently with concrete barriers in place etc.

Calder lost its CAMS track licence in 2002 or 2003 and I don't believe has ever had one again. Supercars stopped going there at that time.

I was at the track that day and it was scary.

Good old Larry, was no love lost with Lowndes at that time and he is no fool.

Those days just after they got rid of the bleed valves were scary.
