Yoong Montoya should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Who was the best sportsman ever?

This may surprise you, but I am going for Mika Hakkinen. Because in the 90's there was not a lot of sportsmanship and gentlemen like Hakkinen did not look like they would succeed, but Hakkinen did it anyway. And he never moaned about TGF tactics, because, like it or not, the one move he makes at the start is legal and everyone does it. Hakkinen was the only driver in the same class as TGF, and his battles with him were thrilling to watch, especially as they could race wheel to wheel without colliding, as we saw at Spa 2000.

Hakkinen, I will never forget you. You were one of the best drivers ever.

freud has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Best sportsman EVER is too difficult to answer.

Best sporstsmanlike attitude in f1 during the 90s...

Mika Hakkinen.... no doubt the most talented & sportsmanlike driver of the 90s. To me he's the benchmark.

Ok, I'm not going to go back through history as I've never seen them race. From what I've seen, there is only one:

Mika Hakkinen

A true gentleman.

Michele Alboreto ranks right up there as well
Ricardo Patrese as well, in fact I think there were quite a few gentlemen drivers

Well, going back there were lots of them. In the 90's I'd have to say Mika Hakkinen - that is pretty much a unanimous agreement here it seems, and rightly so, the bloke was great.

Going back to the eighties, both Elio de Angelis and Michele Alboreto stand out from what I've read

pre 80s? Pretty much all of them! Especially Jim Clark.

All of them? Well maybe not, but it wasn't such a small percentage!

I agree with all above. For me most recently Mika and Damon stand out.

Damon Hill was a true gent, more so than Mika Hakkinen as you have to take into consideration the cars and cirumstances each of the drivers were in (the series of crashes between 94-95)
In Damon Hill's era, it was still easy to overtake, and we saw wheel to wheel battles throughout 94-97, after 98' racing changed and became a game of pitstops where racing was no more, JV is the last F1 Champ, in 97' with slicks and cars that can overtake.

In the 90's = Damon (big time), also Mika Hakkinen.

In my youth, I would say Bruce McLaren, Jo Siffert, Mark Donohue, Carlos Pace, Ronnie Peterson, François Cevert, Patrick Depailler... and so many more I suppose.

Have to agree with Adam about Pre 80's.

Sato san is spot on with Herbert, don't think anyone was such a gent and so good to their fans as Johnny. His fan club (run by his parents) was easily the best ever.

I have to agree with the choice of Johnny too. My Mum and Dad managed to get to go to the Jaguar R1 launch and she wanted to get me Johnny's autograph. She went up to him and asked, but she didn't have a piece of paper. He gave her his ticket for the event!

She also got me Brundle's and Bob Tullius' (both of whom have raced proper Jags!).
