The chances of any manufacturer wanting to enter under the present rules are somewhere between zero and nought. If anyone thinks otherwise then pleasant dreams because that is all it is, a dream. The reality is it has no future commercially and once Archer get out who has the capital to support it? Forget the cars and media rights does anyone think there are buyers lined up to buy it because Archer could not flog it when things were much better.

V8 Fireworks Hyundai are making the cars people want, and Holden not (or any at all for that matter).

Lol. Can’t take that seriously. Just another couple of pollies trying to get some media attention for themselves. Realistically if Holden could be made economically viable whilst still making cars then someone more credible then these two jokers would’ve done something.

Ignoring the individuals concerned - consider a broader initiative.

Do government enterprises need to be economically viable?
Particularly if the need is to reestablish a manufacturing base in light of recent events to safe guard in the event of trade restrictions.

As a holden fan i would love the romantic notion that it could be done but it would be foolish to think that a goverment owned car company would be able to compete with the global car companies. Remember you would have to start the whole thing from scratch

Whilst that sounds a good idea, there is not much left at Fishermans bend , and I thought Elizabeth plant was sold

No they don't...its only in the last couple of decades the gummint bean counters dreamed up the idea that business units should be run at a profit...meanwhile, billions are flushed down the gutter on dubious welfare programs...Australia started car "production" by importing chassis or cab chassis and re-bodying same...

Why not invite a large company to set up a world car plant here with contractual obligations to use Australian content (like we used to do!)...who cares if it is government sponsored? We need to get back to self-sufficiency...

Why not just assemble new cars from and an overseas manufacturer?.
As soon as the Government gets involved the product is usually crap.

They didn't need the government to make crap cars but they might have done a better job at crap with their help. The proof of this is that they are no longer made.

Taking the BMW manufacturing from South Africa might be a good way to go. Offer a much more stable political environment, and a similar climate.

But the reason SA has it and we don't is minimum wages, business taxes, government subsidies and unions.

Somehow people are OK with subsidising mining companies to the tune of billions, who in turn pay no tax and hardly employ people.

Yet a, couple or hundred million to keep 3 manufacturers going, 2 of them exporting, and people lose their ****ing minds.

Between 100k and 200k jobs lost. Good legacy Tony Abbott.

It's not that simple Mixer.

Ford Australia were building two orphan cars: Ford Falcon unrelated to the Ford Taurus, Ford Territrory unrelated to the Ford Edge -- it's stupid to design unrelated models that do the same job.

Holden Australia were building one orphan car: Holden Commodore unrelated to the Chevrolet Impala -- it's stupid to design unrelated models that do the same job.

Toyota were the only company doing it properly and building a world car, but then most Toyota Camry Hybrid buyers are now just as happy with that prestigious label "Made in Japan" rather than the former "Made in Australia"...

It has been consistently said that Ford Australia and General Motors Holden simply DID NOT have enough leverage and influence in Detroit to get Ford and General Motors respectively to dump the Taurus/Edge and Impala/Traverse, and get them to focus on the Falcon & Territory and Commodore & as-yet-non-existent-Commodore-SUV as their global midsize (by US standards) sedan and midsize SUV.

You don't remember the Button Plan that started our slow slide to oblivion?

SA has been favoured/stacked by various Govts (mainly Labor) for yonks...billions poured into it to try and keep some sort of industrial capability going despite the hinderance for the Unions...don't get me started on Submarines!

I was involved in a project building a run of 300 vehicles out of Adelaide ...successfully...amazingly!!

Or John Howard who famously said we did not need to a manufacturing nation just a smart nation and then encourage miners to export huge bits of Australia in the same breath without secondary treatment such as turning it into steel here. Count the number of manufacturers or CKD operations that used to be in Oz, not a complete list I am sure but these are some

Holden
Ford
Chrysler/Mitsubishi
Toyota
Nissan
Renault
Volkswagen since returned
AMI with multiple brands
Leyland/BMC

And that does not include trucks, plant equipment etc.

Brilliant! and your point is? All these brands where expensive to produce in the last couple of decades where Unions ran wild...

Unions are the biggest target, better that than blaming companies for inept management. Leyland (JRA) failed because the government introduced a luxury car tax just after the management buy out occured and sales simply stopped dead. That was a brilliant move. I see you have a balanced view, a chip on both shoulders.
