Mansell's moustache

Nigel Mansell used to have a moustache.

Now he doesn't.

He had one in 1980 when he started F1.

He had one in 1995 when he left F1.

The question is - did he ever have a moustache-free period of his F1 career, and did he win a grand prix clean shaven.

I don't ever recall Mansell without a moustache during his F1 career.
IMO he just looks half the man he was now that he doesn't have one anymore.

A clean shaven Mansell, what has the world come to...

Conversely, Damon Hill never won bearded, I think.

I think he was clean shaven at some point in his racing career - late 80s or early 90s I think

I definitely recall a picture of him as part of a harrier (I think) crew pre-Ferrari days sans 'tache.

He must have done it in the off-season though.

Yes, he did race sans 'tache. I don't know how many wins he had without it though. Maybe that was the source of his power.

Damon often had winter testing beard.

I believe he shaved it off for for some medical reason, something to do with nerve endings I think.

I have a picture of Mansell without moustache when racing for Williams in mid 1988. Really!

Scary pictures, cougar. Is it me, or did his mum buy him a hat his head could grow into?

He did indeed shave it off for the 1988 season and according to a book I read he had been complaining (complaining, Nigel, Never!!!) to the Williams engineers that the Normally Aspirated 3.5L Judd engine that Williams used that year was seriously down on power to which they retorted you loose a bit of weight and We'll find you some more power. So for the next test Nigel shaved off the tosh and said I've lost some weight now find me more power

Made me chuckle at the time

1988. The winless season at Williams with Judd engines. He also contracted Chicken pox that year and grew it back to cover the scars/spots. It dissapeared in 96 and never publically came back.

He looks better without the 'tache, really. It always looked like a third eyebrow.

The man has fantastic follicular engineering.

The tache was attached to a handle and is now being used as a brush in the pitlane at Silverstone.
