I thought it was rather telling that on last Friday's early evening news on BBC1 we were told that it was a big weekend for sport.There was the women's World Cup,the Cricket World Cup and Wimbledon.Not a word about a grand prix seventy miles north of BBC HQ.

As I didn't watch any sport on TV over the last weekend, I don't know which channels showed which sport.

However, is it possible that the BBC were actually promoting those activities that the BBC were showing on TV, whilst I believe that the F1 was transmitted by Channel 4?

If so, the BBC was just advertising what a big weekend for sport there was to be found on their own channels.

CCW and the GP were both on C4. The Women's World Cup and Wimbledon were BBC.

BBC 5 Live still covers the F1 live, so im surprised they made no mention of it.
But listening to F1 (and a lot of sport actually) on the radio is very strange

BBC dont tend to say much about motorsport in general, they have had Formula E all season but you wouldnt know its hidden away on the website that can only be found by people who already know where it is

Now there's a surprise and it will effect advertising revenue, as fewer people watch and advertisers can't reach their audience. A 22 race season, with a diminished TV audience won't bode well.

Of course it will also affect team sponsorship as well, as with reduced viewers comes reduced reach and that will make it less attractive to sponsors.

A big hit but not surprising really. A shame because they do have a good presenting team.

Well anyone could have seen that coming. It’s just the powers that be didn’t seem to think that it would happen like this. Shows it was a bad idea to give the Sky the exclusive rights from the start

I don't think the powers that be were stupid enough to think this would not happen, they just did not care in any way.

It's all about money, and for a sport that is already rich enough to be embarrassing, that says it all and a major reason why I take nothing more than a passing interest in the supposed leading motorsport series in the world.

I don't think he said it was Sky's fault, just that it was a bad idea to give the Sky the exclusive rights, and I agree.

I should think quite a lot, not that he needed anymore money and now we're seeing how detrimental the cost to F1 has been. At the time, a number of people predicted this would happen.

But who was it a bad idea for.
The organisers?
The fans?
The tv viewers?
The teams?
The sport as a whole?

Judging the benefit of an idea based on viewing figures alone does not give the whole picture. I'm sure there are at least a few people who felt, and still feel, that it was a good idea. (I'm not saying I am one of them though

).
