Kicking-back should be qualifying in the top 5 on the gridKicking-back should be qualifying in the top 5 on the grid
Williams, McLaren and Renault all have the same numbers as last year.

For simplicity and continuity there's no point in switching your drivers numbers round in that situation.

Good point. In fact there was call a couple of years back to keep the numbers the same each year (lead by Sauber, when they had low numbers?). So apart from getting no.1 things would stay the same.

iirc, it was between the 2001 and 2002 season, and the FIA suggested that teams keep the same numbers, but as Sauber would be having numbers 7 and 8 for 02 (their lowest numbers ever) they veto'd the idea.

As Rafe outscored JPM in 01, Williams gave Rafe the lower number in 02, but as JPM scored more points in 02 and 03, he's now got the lower number. (in 03 and 04)

There were some swapsies in the past - e.g. Ghinzani and Gabbiani in the Osellas in 1981 had both 31 and 32 (tho' Piercarlo only had a couple of races); Zorzi started 1977 with 17, then took Tom Pryce's 16 for a race after poor Tom was killed; Shadow spinoff Arrows used 36 for Patrese, but when they added a car for Stommelen gave the German the 36 and Riccardo took 35; Brabham finished 1979 with 5-Zunino and 6-Piquet, vice versa in 1980; also Ferrari in 1977 ended with 11-Villeneuve before he moved to 12 the next year.
