Audi R8 to race at Le Mans in 2005

I bit suprised that no one has picked this one up, but it was report in yesterdays Autosport that Audi is planning on running the R8's at Le Man next year. Basically they are going to add a wooden plank to the bottom of the car to make it meet the 2005 rules.

I will leave you guys to discuss this one I am of to Knockhill to play with some touring cars....

Audi is not going to build a new car until they need to because in 2005 all they will compete against again is privateers.

This again just points to the faulty thinking in the concept of changing rules gradually. Why the ACO thought any serious contender would build new cars before it is necessary to use them is beyond me. This is one area were history should have been a good teacher!

The current competitors have been asked by the ACO to give their views on a couple of options - It's good that the ACO are consulting competitors but it all seems very late in the day

Dave Dispain on Wind Tunnel said the ACO is gonna go with 50 KG wieght for the R8 in 2005 as opposed to the plank, I don't know the source though. (for those of you in EU wind tunnel is a call-in motorsports show dealing mostly with NASCAR but I watch because they someetimes talk about real motorsports) Do any of you have confirmation on this?

I think that Rob opened this one to focus on Audi R8 and what VAG intends to do with the car next year...

So :

50kg and and a 5% restrictor cut is not such a big deal. Most cars are over the minimum weight for a start, and only around 25bhp will be lost.

Current Audi R8 in '04 LMP900 configuration> 900 kilos (1980 lbs. without driver/fuel) and 600 hp = 3.3 lbs./hp

2005 Audi R8> 950 kilos (2090 lbs.) and around 575 hp = ~3.6 lbs./hp

2004/2005 LMP1> 1980 kilos and 650 hp (for an '04 LMP1)= ~3.05 lbs./hp

slightly OT, but I don't think it's big enough to warrant a thread and it's Audi-related

the Audi A3 sportback has been released with an innovative engine, which for the first time mixes turbos with the FSI technology that Audi does so well. an engine derivated from this one will equip the new VW Golf GTI.

Now I wonder, where have we seen a engine which uses both turbos and FSI pushed to the hardest?...

Why don't they just bring back the Gp.C engine regulations - they'd make more sense now than ever before - here's a basic amount of fuel, and whatever engine concept you want to show up with, it just has to be it efficient enough. This works for alternative fuels, too: "here's a basic amount of (m)ethanol", etc.
