Not bothering with that as DNA evidence has proved that Darwin was wrong, even Tracy on Facebook that works at Tesco's knows more these days

Yeah, this is very sad. I skied past it in a blizzard two years ago, without previously knowing it was there ... pulled-in, thinking it would be an enjoyable way of spending a couple of hours on what was a bitter day on the slopes, but it was shut that day. Had 'set aside' time to visit next time in the area, but I never got back. Was indeed a spectacular location .... such a shame to lose the bikes.

Amusing story in the local paper at the weekend - an Alfa 147 was clocked on the motorway at over 160 km/h (limit 130km/h). When the police stopped the car they found that the driver was 13 years old & that all four people in the car were under age. They were East Europeans from Lille & apparently were going to Paris for the day out! They probably didn't get there...

In the same report, the police also relieved a Flying Dutchman of the use of his Bentley for a week for going even faster.

I don't know how any of you who are of a similar age to me are getting on with their GPs' practice, but I currently have steam emitting from my ears having had yet another frustrating discussion with my lot. In the past, I couldn't have wished for a better service than I received from them, but it has got steadily worse over the last 3 years. Unfortunately, the doctor who "presided" over the local surgery, and who was very much like a family doctor of old, took very early retirement so that he could travel and visit his brother in New Zealand.

Since then, one never knows which doctor would attend to you. In total, 3 of the partners left the practice as well as their nurse practitioner sister, and the senior partner has decided not to replace them, but relies on a series of locums to take on the slack. Then they decided, using Covid-19 as an excuse, they have closed the local surgery, which was a 5 minute stroll from me, and we have to travel to their other surgery which is a 15 minute drive away.

Due to the fact that I have not been in the best of health for the last couple of years and mixing socially has been a no-no since last year, I decided that it was worth my while to have a car sitting idle outside, so I sold it, and rely on a taxi to get to the local supermarket and back when absolutely necessary. And so, when my doctors were instructed by the consultants at the hospital that they were to provide me with a course of injections, I presumed that they would in turn instruct the district nurses to deal with the matter, as they did when I came out of hospital in August.

How wrong I was. Although the consultants wrote to the surgery in mid December, I am still waiting for the first of the injections that I have to have every other day. The senior partner at the practice refuses, even though the practice manager has confirmed that the district nurses will carry out the injections, to authorise it, and I can only assume that this is because he doesn't want to spend the money to pay for it to be done.

And I am digging my heels in because I think that it is totally unfair that this doctor, who I have never actually met or I don't think even spoke to, expects me to spend my limited income on 6 taxi journeys, one each way as the taxi won't wait outside, each week for a month.

Blimey, what a week and it's only Tuesday. Yesterday I was honoured to receive an invitation to share a car in the Spa 6hrs and this morning Goodwood told me to expect an invite for the revised 78MM.

Next I'll be getting a job.

I'm registered with our local group practice, as I have been since we moved here about 27 years ago - and initially on the very infrequent occasions when I needed to see a doctor I always saw the same guy. After he retired, its purely random choice who one sees - and often its one of the practice nurses - who to be fair seem perfectly competent.

We did experience some reluctance to arrange for district nurses to come out to administer injections to milady when she required them a few years ago - they wanted her to self-administer, or to get me to do them (she is an ex-nurse, but I'm not) but she dug her heels in and it was sorted........

I think a complaint to the local health authority (copied to your MP) is warranted...

Encouraging news, Peter......however what are your odds on the two events actually taking place? Or at least on travel being permitted to Spa?

I finally got around to registering with a local doctor recently - i haven't used one since 1966 but you never know! I've found one who is both an English speaker & a petrolhead. I noticed an XK8 in the car park with a Goodwood Revival sticker in the back window, so I may well go more often now...

Sorry, John, but why? By "difficult" I think David means "not professional" or "not aware" or "totally lost" as seems to be the case. Is it really new? Only Calais seem to work properly, they've been anticipating the situation for a while. Good news, it can't be worse…

Some years ago the BBC or ITV were trying to interest German TV in the Dave Allen Show, and showed a sketch, where Allen as a street sweeper, having accumulated a pile of rubbish, looks around furtively, and lifts up the pavement and sweeps the rubbish underneath.

The German TV chap said it would not work because you could not lift up the pavement in Germany.

Sorry Rudernst, not knocking your country.

I remember that sketch from when it was shown originally; it was hilarious. There was actually a tribute to Dave Allen fairly recently, and that was one of the sketches that they highlighted during the programme, which is why I remember it so well.

Sounds a nice route, how does the price compare? Harwich isn't as much of a trek as I expected, I went there to deliver a car and trailer once, it was quite an easy drive home.

Do any ferries still run to Ostend or Zeebrugge?

They run from Hull and Tilbury to Zeebrugge, but I don't think that Ostend is served from the UK anymore. It seems as that service, from Ramsgate, ceased in about 2013 when the ferry company went bust.

Thanks Mike. A pity as both were nice convenient ports. When I lived in Norfolk I used to take the overnight ferry from Felixstowe to Zeebrugge.

Used Harwich to the Hook in 2019 to go to Spettacolo Sportivo at Zandvoort - it was a lot cheaper than my usual Hull-Rotterdam choice.....I've actually got tickets booked on the Harwich route to go to an Imp get together in May - deferred from last year which was cancelled.....but its been cancelled for this year, too, so I'm wondering what I can change the tickets to, now! Have to open negotiations with Stena.....

yes a bit more expensive (about 300 for my motorhome without trailer, next Sept/October) but about 35 miles closer once over the other side.
