V8's taking over Surfers
I read today that the V8's could replace the CART round at Surfers Paradise due to the happenings back in America. What is the chance of this happening? Also how many people do you think would turn up to see the V8's. I'm guessing not to many.

This is AA's 'lead story' for the week...it hinges around two problems - the happenings in the US possibly keeping CART at home and not wanting to fly to Australia (they flew to Europe and the UK and got back so where is the problem???) and, of course, the collapse of Ansett and now Air New Zealands problems possibly affecting the V8's sojourn to NZ - not so much the cars but the support staff, crew, VIP's, TC's wallet etc.

Assuming all this comes true, you could make Surfers replace NZ in the calendar and solve the problem. But ignoring that...I think Surfers will be ok and NZ will hinge on Air NZ.

With Air New Zealands shares being suspended on the NZ stock exchange this morning I wouldn't be putting my money on Pukekohe at the moment

Guess who paid for an Air NZ before all of this happened? Arrgggghhhh....
I honestly can't see Indy being too big a drama- they normally charter a pair of frieght planes from Indianapollis- and so long as they let planes fly, they shouild be ok. Saying that, it'll probably take an extra day to clear all of the equipment etc. |

The charter aircraft are part of the problem - look at what F1 have had to go through.
On the other hand IF the US commence some sort of action against anyone, that could well be a reason to stop CART coming as well. |

Anyways, at this stage it is still go, but it would be a big kick in the arse the tourism industry doesn't need at the moment, especially after CHOGM was given the chop today...

Would a sole V8 race instead of the Honda Indy 300 actually take place, i can't see Honda being to happy sponsering an event it doesn't compete in, and in the AA report no one apart from AVESCO was quoted.

From all sources, at this very second, the Champ Car race will go ahead. The drama lies if there is a full scale war, or any other dramas that keep planes from flying...

If they have CHOGM next year, I'll be pretty happy...I've never seen town so clean! A small army has gone through the botanical gardens and pulled all of the weeds...it's amazing!

Remember that the CART series sponsor is FedEx. Guess who supplies the two 747 Freighters that bring all the gear out here. Getting the gear out here should be no problem, it's just a question of organising the passenger planes to get all the people here.

Not correct - the problem is not getting equipment OR crews out here - it is getting them *back* into the states. Particularly if fighting does start while they are here.
