Renault V6 - Postponed!

Problem with the lights (Red-> Nothing), (inevitable) start-line shunt: race now delayed until the afternoon to give people a chance to fix the cars.

A very unusual decision from the organisers, but unpopular with drivers on grid. I have a feeling that they wouldn't be able to do right though.

Yeah seems like a lose/lose situation. Seems like the right decision to me, a couple of the guys who were taken out were the one's who stayed on the grid because they hadn't seen a green light - it would be unfair if they were not allowed to start because of the damage caused.

Copied from Eurosport

1/30 GREEN LIGHT! We are go, but big problems at the start! Chaos! Jaime Melo stalled on the grid, causing a massive pile up! Gommendy is clipped, and his car rides right up on top of Melo's!! RED FLAG!!

1/30 Melo and Gommendy are out, and the teams are frantically trying to get their cars into the pits.

1/30 Gommendy cannot understand what has happened... he is gobsmacked!

1/30 Melo claims that Neel Jani in third had overshot his grid position, and was trying to reverse back when the red light went off. In the confusion, Melo did not go,but those at the back of the grid did, causing the pile-up!

11:51 Lopez and Neel both overshot, and the race should clearly not have been started. Lopez's team believe he is lucky to be allowed to continue...

11:53 We'll be back under way shortly. Don't go away, we'll keep you posted on all the developments!

11:58 Seven minutes to go until the restart!

12:02 RACE POSTPONED: Race Director Jurgen Baath has said that the crash was the fault of race officials, not the drivers. Therefore the race will be run later this afternoon to give the stricken Melo and Gommendy a chance to get their cars ready to race...

12:05 The race will now take place at 17:00 CET

Does that mean the officials will pay the cost of the accident

Didn't know that jurgen Baath was race directing!

Sounds a bit like the start at the Nurburgring F1 race a few years back where the red lights stayed on and on and on until a few cars shot forward a few metres. No accident that time though.

entirely the right decision for me - gommendey got clipped into the stationary (and correct) jaime melo, and therefore they were out thru no fault of their own (particulary hi-amie melo). Glad to see common sense prevailing, the drivers who were complaining were just trying it on.

I can see it from the drivers view - they've built up all the tension and adrelaine for not one but two starts, and then had it all taken away from them. Perhaps they didn't know exactly what had happened (though it was a straight stall) or something else; but they would have been emotionally charged. So I wouldn't say they were trying it on at all!
