Crowd Figures

It has always been a mystery to me but when AVESCO or any other mob for that matter release crowd figures, they say they had so many spectators over the 2 or 3 days or whatever it is.
If this is taken from ticket sales, how is this figure worked out. On my reckoning it must be taken that a three day pass is counted as 3 sales or 2 day pass counted as 2 sales. Correct me if i'm wrong, but some of the crowd figures advertisecd just don't add up.
Also these figures must include track officials as they have to pay for a pass like everybody else. I doubt whether Mr Cochrane and his cronies would have to pay though.

Track officials don't have to pay for a ticket- normally they should recieve a freeby for themselves, and one for a guest.

I think we established a while back that the total attendance is the one that is announced, ie all ticket sales, etc.

But then again, I've seen some of the numbers for the press made up at various meetings over the year, and a lot of speed counting takes place

Avesco give away a lot of tickets (1000's) to the main players like Holden and Ford.
Holden and Ford then give tickets to suppliers and dealers and the automotive trade.
The Suppliers and Dealers then give the tickets to whoever they are trying to impress and they give them to their mates.
What you will find is if a company gets 50 tickets only a small percentage will get used (I know of one company that gets 20 and only 2 get used!)
But AVESCO will claim that all these tickets will be used on all days!

The other thing with crowd figures, who cares!

Who cares if there are 20,000 or 50,000 or 2,000,000 at a race, why do they have to announce the figures during the telecast and to who's benefit is it?

It is all about marketing!

If you are trying to sell advertising to people you have to be able to say how many people are seeing the adverts!

And that my friends is what V8 Supercar racing is all about!
It is not for entertainment it is for selling products.

Morris - crowd figures are all important and are part and parcel of how/why AVESCO will allocate rounds.

Take Barbagallo and Mallala tracks - both tracks, just before they were initially pulled fromthe V8 schedules reportedly suffered a decrease in crowd figures and this was, in part, used to justify their removal from the series. IN Barbagallo's case a major sponsor, plus being the only race in the west, helped save it - but this wasn't the case with Mallala.

If, as has been suggested, Eastern Creek is to be sacrificed for China, just watch and I think we will find that it's crowd figure is officially down on other events held at the track for V8's this year - and AVESCO will then try and use this to justify the removal of the event instead of expanding the series.

As to what figures are used? Everyone attending the venue over the course of teh meeting is counted - officials, teams, sponsors and paying crowd.

Unless of course, like Barbagallo in 96, when a crowd estimate was asked for, the figure was promptly given '40,000' - a couple of raised eyebrows and 'You sure's' came out - and then 'OK - make it 50,000' (or whatever the final official figure was) and that is what was announced - they had NO IDEA but it looked good.

And, of course in 99 a figure was given by AVESCO that was so obviously inflated that it just made a mockery of attendance figures....

Yes and look what happened in Canberra!

The ACT government wanted to know why the income didn't match the crowd figures!

I have also worked out another reason for dodgy figures and the giving away of lots of free passes that never get used and I am sure that the ATO would be interested in my theory!

How long until the Tax Office says 50,000 people at $50 each = 50,000 x $5.00 GST thank you very much, especially if the crowd was only 30,000.

Only one problem with this idea - AVESCo aren't the promoters of the meetings so they wouldn't be the ones that get hit...

Don't mention Canberra!! It still makes my blood boil!! What an unmittigated disaster!!

Pete55, excuse me for being a cynical old P, but every post of yours seems to be a Market Survey. If you rang me up, I would politely say "Not Interested Thanks!". I would hate to think that AVESCO were actually surveying the members of this forum without coming clean (nahh, couldn't happen!)

Lol, sorry 275 GTB, I'm only a motorsport fan and Tony Cochrane and CAMS cynic.
I was told to watch the CAMS website for vacancy openings but i don t have much hair now and have no plans to have a flat forehead as well.
Maybe it s the radio work i have done and businesses i've been involved in that is coming out in me.

I've noticed that at Oran Park you hear most years how we have another record crowd here etc....you look at the corresponding round in '95 or '96, and it looks just a jam packed.

When i was at the Konica round at OP this year, i often wondered how many times i might have been counted.

Inflated crowd figures, not unique to motorsport. Rugby League is the worst offender.
