Just like it is difficult to compare drivers of different eras, I think it is difficult to compare the situation of the early 90s with the current situation.

Of course, it could be argued that it is BECAUSE of the teams mentioned from the early 90's that the 107% rule is in place - to stop this kind of thing happening. |

Back in the Eurobrun era you had circa 38 cars trying to qualify. The backmarkers had to go through pre-qualifying and then qualifying. Only 26 cars where allowed on the grid in the . Backmarkers add an important character to the show but they need to have a minimum amount of commitment and assets. The management of HRT barely have either. |

If you awarded points right down to last place (40th?) as they do in some other racing you could have the teams who did not qualify for the main game have their race for the minor points on Sunday morning.... |

It would then totally collapse as the money was split too thinly though. There has to be an upper limit, I think twelve to fourteen teams is right. Yes, the second tier needs more promotion, but F1 needs to have a limit on how many teams.

That limit happens fairly naturally anyway. I agree teams for teams sake doesn't help.
Anyway, HRT did it yesterday. Wasn't that hard was it. Do we want teams and performances worse than that in F1? |

Dont assume anything. Do you want open competition or do you want a cartel.....? There would be nothing wrong in terms of having the top teams in qualifying receiving a fairly equal share of the money down to a particular place in qualifying... say 26th or 28th with the top 24 starting the main race and 25th to 40th having to fight it out for the minor points. Or the start money for the 25th - 30th place would be the prize money pool for the preliminary race for the minor points. Yes it would be radically different from the present Concorde agreement but would that be a bad thing for the sport (as opposed to the interests of the top teams....) I think not. |

As a fan I do miss the days when they had 38 cars trying to scramble onto the grid. Quite a number of characters! How you could justify spending money throughout the season with your only hope of being 30th? Those days will never return and after the USGP fiasco the FIA/Todt has promised to send in a team of experts to any new entrants to much sure the backing isn't anything other than a mirage.
They shouldn't need to be wealthy though just stable with enough cast-iron agreements/assets/sponsorship to put them on a road that will take them through the season. |

Does anybody know how the 107% rule works during wet conditions? Will the abandon that rule if q1 will be declared wet?
