Found another (older) article that talks a bit about potential entrants for next year:

Quote:
At around R1.3-million, a new GTC car will also be much more affordable than a current Production Car racer. The purpose-built GTC cars will feature a single specification tubular chassis wrapped in metal bodies supplied by various manufacturers which as of now include Audi, Ford, Jaguar and Nissan. Engines will be limited to 2-litre turbo units, with computer management systems strictly controlled in order to keep racing and budgets as close as possible.

Production Cars’ two Audi teams – Sasolracing and Engen Xtreme – have confirmed they will switch to GTC next year with existing driver line-ups of Hennie Groenewald and Gennaro Bonafede, and Michael Stephen and Simon Moss respectively set to remain. The Audi teams will likely use A3 Sedan bodies instead of current S4s. Gary Formato will compete in a Ford Focus-bodied car, and there has also been interest from privateer teams looking to enter BMW 2-Series Coupés.

The current crop of Production Cars will be allowed to compete in GTC races, but in a lower tier GTC Lights category. GTC Africa aims to start the 2016 season with a 12-car field.

South Africa's having quite an upstart auto racing scene, haven't they? This series, the endurance series, the announced new formula series. How come?

Well, all their top series - Wesbank V8s, Shelby Prototypes - imploded during the 2000s, so they are really only trying to get it started again right now. I think a lot of different groups are throwing stuff at the wall and just trying to see what sticks, so to speak. Apparently state level series are doing okay-ish, but their national top series over the last few years was Production Cars and those even struggled to put more than a dozen of cars on the grid...

It'll be a long time - if ever - before they get back to what they had in the 80s and early 90s:

Out of context, this sentence in conjunction with South Africa can read quite disturbing

No seriously, the series looks pretty spectacular. Kinda like IMSA GTO if you ask me. I didn't know that even Hans-Joachim Stuck himself competed there, so the series had some sort of international recognition when Audi was willing to send one of its works drivers down there.

Some more information about the series' 2016 plans and a sketch of a GTC spec VW Jetta.
No firm additional commitments from teams or manufacturers as of right now, tough.

Nice looking car. Good to see they have replaced the ugly original front.

I can understand the reason but a shame they will not use the big V8 engine.

VW with a two car "works" entry:

Bit surprising, considering their recent troubles. Maybe the South African importer has less problems with Dieselgate than people in other markets...?

Series frontman Gary Formato says that nine GTC cars will take to the grid at the opening round next year fielded mostly by drivers who were competing in the now defunct Production Car series.

Among them are some of SA’s best tin-top racers including reigning champ Hennie Groenewald, multiple title holder Michael Stephen, Michael van Rooyen and well-known TV personality Gary Formato.

Apart from the nine GTC cars, the category will also make room for lower level classes: GTC Production and GTC X.

There was a bit of a surprise at the series' launch a few days ago:

Yup, that's a BMW. Looks like 8 GTC-cars (plus some production cars) for the first year and cars from VW, BMW and Audi. Kind of surprised there are no Fords, seeing how it's based on the MARC-cars, but the BMW is a nice surprise and actually looks quite a bit better than the Australian Focus and Mazda with their weird radiator opening at the front.

I see they went WTCC style with the cooling duct.

Wish the V8 engine was still available. Would be neat to have two spec powerplant options.

The engines aren't spec at all. While 2.0T is the only engine formula that's allowed, the engines are indeed manufacturer-specific from what I understand.

Season Preview 2017

Looks like 8 cars in GTC (2 Audis, 4 BMWs, 2 VWs) and 8 for GTC2, i.e. the former production class. 6 Golfs and 2 Minis in there for now, but apparently there's a Honda on the way too. The top class might also see a mid-season addition as there is a new car in build by a privateer - going by some comments on their facebook site, that could be a Ford.

Not sure where this series is going right now... 16 cars is the bare minimum for it to be considered even remotely credible, but they are managing this and might get up to 18 or more during the year.

The elephant in the room is of course TCR, which was announced about one year after the plans for the GTC-series were made public... Maybe that would work as an in between class?

8 GTC cars last year...now 8 + 2. Not really an increase of cars.

Do we know something about costs compared to TCR?

Last year they said 1.3million Rand, i.e. a smidgen under 100k€... fairly similar to TCR then. Local manufacturing must help with keeping prices down. Not sure about running costs. If the engines are indeed non-spec and push out close to 400bhp they might need a bit more attention than the TRC-mills.

I think 8-10 cars in the top class would actually be fine if they could back it up with 15 or so production cars.

At first I was enthusiastic about GTC but that has become less.
I still like the V8 powered original. It's larger predecessor, the NZ V8 Supertourer even more. An Audi and BMW Supertourer would be cool, but more expensive than GTC (around €20k more?). Maybe the S-A market is just too small for a GTC series like this.

It would be nice to have a world series where cars from national championships can compete in their local round, like WTCC did with S2000

TCR? They had only 11 full season entries yet, even ignoring Macau they averaged 18 cars with a minimum 15 per round. That shows that it can work like that. They just need races where the championships are (Thailand being a great example).

Instead of TCR international a TCR World Cup. One round in Europe, one in Asia and one in Middle-East.
