Porsche's in rallycross

Over the years Porsche's have been used with reasonal success in rallycross. It wasnt really about how competitive these great cars were, it was just the spectacle of them, when I say Porshe's it was just about alway's the 911 or in the other gize's of 930, 990, 935. The reason for this post is to find out your favourite all time rallycross Porsche's. I will name a few Ive been lucky enough to see in action over my 23 years of watching rallycross. I'll start with probably the most successful one the Matti Alamaki bi-turbo 4X4. Matti won the European championship with this car in the mid 80's, it was a very costly venture with alot of Le Mans technology involved, But Matti did great in it, it most have been a ******* to drive with a reputed 900bhp+ power output, the car ended up with Marko Jokinen who didn't match the success his compariot had. Virtually identical, but maybe nicer to look at was the Seppo Nittymaki version, with a huge rear wing that made it abit tail happy, later used by Jukka Pelttari. other bi-turbo's were used but with limited success, Pekka Ranternan being the exception, Ludo Steukers was very spectacular as well. Late 70's early 80's were a period when the exotic GT cars were used by the leading competitors. Olle Arnesson's always went well as did Rolf Nilsson, others include Austrian Gunther Spindler, Swede Goren Lundgren,Dane Arne Jorgensen, Dane Henrik Jacobsen. German Hans Kirchhof, to name but a few.

Britain had many Porsche's, in Rob Gibson's case used with great success , even with the normally aspirated 2WD version. My favourite was Mr Porsche John Greasley's version always great noise coming from his car, also built the most powerful rallycross car to date with the black 930 bi-turbo 4x4, sadly wasn't seen as much as it should have. John Clark, Colin Perry Williams, Des Winks, Dave Wallis, Dennis Atkinson, John Cavendish, Michael Bourner, John Smith.

What's your favorite?

I've only seen 2 Porsches used in rallycross - Mike Bourners and Sue Jeffries' and I have to say neither of them has particularly impressed me. It never fails to amuse when you see a Porsche being passed by a Nova.

Guess I missed out on seeing the best of them!

That car won something????? What was it up against? It's never looked even remotely competitive when I've seen it, as soon as it gets on the loose stuff it's hopeless. It's also dropped from 4 wheel drive down to 2 wheel drive - that hasn't helped the traction side of things but it was getting absolutely whupped by the other supercars (it just gets whupped by Novas and Corsas instead now).

in 1982 when it won the grand prix, Nilsson beta Trevor Hopkins and Martin Schanche. Although there were only 4 finishers as the likes of Matti Alamaki and John Welch retired in the final. Nilsson in fact won by 25 seconds!!

It's rarely pointing the right direction! In fact there are quite a few occasions where it's been pointing entirely the wrong direction. Or not been on the track anymore (seems to do a fair amount of grass cutting at Lydden).

As for the women drivers bit - wouldn't like to say (that sort of comment can produce painful results as I have found out in the past, just thinking about it still makes my eyes water).

I seem to remember it being driven by a bloke at one of the Lydden meetings and it wasn't any better so I'll say it's a definite car problem.

It is some times driven by her partner Barry Stewart. (it was a while ago though)

I wouldnt have thought it was going fast enough to point in the wrong direction.

Anyone remember another 911 in British rallycross in the early 90's?- there was a possibly UK-based Scandinavian driver whose name totally escapes me who ran a green 4wd 911 briefly in the British series around 1990/91 or so- as I recall the car was only used for a short time until it was replaced by a 6R4, but definitely appeared at an early-season Lydden meeting....

That Sue Jeffereys Porsche is only half the car it was. Nilsson had a pretty potent set up back then with a very powerful engine. I was at that first GP in 82 and have to say he dominated the meeting, which included state of the art Quattro's and superquick Escort MK2 turbo's. As for this of the green porsche "KA" um seem to recall Morten Anderson used one then went on to a 6R4.

I remember Morten Anderson.......1991 European Rallycross at Lydden Hill, he claimed he was British! hehe.......even though he is from Denmark.

He was a regular in the GB champs in the early ninetees as well. But always underachived. the firs time i came across him in the Metro was at the King of Croft meating in 1990 where Mark Flahaty stormed to victory.

Oooh Bert - handbags at 10 paces!

Never been clobbered by a Porsche (yet). Been hit on the grid by one of the old Fast Parts (god I could have had a field day there with a yellow paintbrush) when the driver wouldn't come to his grid box, and then at the last moment his foot "slipped" off the clutch. Luckily for me it was wet and he pushed me back. I now wear rigger boots so if anyone ever does that again their car will come off second best I promise.
Nearly got wiped out by Tony Proctor as well in the Sierra - he did a burnout just before the grid and lost it - ended up facing the wrong way on the grid. I think that has to be my biggest gripe with drivers - they have all the space from Paddock to the grid to warm up their tyres - and they do it 20ft in front of you!

I remember at an old Euro meeting a chap in a black Porsche coming to the line with his arm out the window. He called me over and asked me to put a stone under his wheel to stop him from rolling. When I say stone I actually mean a f**k off size piece of flint. He was none too impressed when his stone joined all the others in the gravel trap.

Ahhh the joys of being on the startline.......

Could the green Porsche you are thinking about be Rob Gibsons car that was eventually written off at Lydden in the mid eighties. He then replaced it with a MG Metro and used it for several seasons if memory serves me well!

I thought Gibbo's Porsche was yellow? The infamous video clip of him leaving Chessons Drift by a most unconventional route I think will back me up.....

I didn't realise there was a conventional way to leave Chessons.

Everybody seems to have very different lines through there, I've even seen one or two people go through Chessons without using any of the grass or banking. (Obviously they've lost it the minute they've got back onto the sealed surface and speared into the tyre wall).

No, thinking about it, it would definitely be the Morten Andersen car (I've managed to find it listed in an old Lydden programme, and I'm sure I've got a decent photo of it somewhere)- Gibson's 911 was yellow, as Hog says, and I've never actually seen that car in action other than on TV- by the time I went to my first rallycross meeting, I'm sure he was running his 6R4

Oops.
Quite right Hog, Gibsons car was yellow and what a spectacular end became of it, I think it only just missed the truck parked behind the bank. Was Andersons car a flourescent green or dark green, I'm sure I saw it in action, just cannot place it clearly against Alemaki, Gibson etc.

Spooky, that's the second time Matti Alamaki's Porsche has cropped up this week. I was discussing it only last Sunday. Excuse me while I wipe away the drool...

Was watching the '86 ERC tape the other day. The things Matti did with that Porsche were just plain silly. Anyone who reckons he won the ERC for Peugoet coz he had the best car should watch that tape and see how hard he tried to get that thing handling.
Gibbo's car ended up with a guy called Dave Phillipson, who did OK with it in 1990.
As for Barry Stewart, he really knows what he is doing with 911's as he tunes one of the quickest cars in Open class Porsche circuit racing.
I think the car is a bit old and frail, and really should be put out to grass.
