Steering Rack Identity problem??
Can anyone please help me to identify the steering rack in the attached pic's. It is used in in Osella PA series sports cars from 1973 to 1978. It has 'Cam Gears ' cast into it and therefore should easy to work out but it is not! Please ignore the 'cut & shut' addition in the middle and also the steering arms. Sig Osella says that he remebers using a rack from 'a small british car' It is not Mini, Herald, Escort, Imp, Sprite etc Heelllllllllppp!!

A small British car that's not a Mini, Herald, Escort, Imp or Sprite. What about a Vauxhall Viva?

I cannot really help but I'd suggest that it may be from a
"small british car" that sold in rather large numbers here in Italy. I'll try to make up my mind about it..... |

The 1100 rack looks very close especially bearing in mind that our rack has been machined where it locates into the mounts. There is a casting number on the rack if that helps?? Thank you so much so far

The numbers
"Brevetti Britannici 911364 882570 Brevetti Australian 230459 231258 Brevetti Francesi 1212690 "sound like patent numbers to me but I am not sure, the "Cam Gears Ltd 21389" number would be the Manufacturers ID number. To me the rack looks like a BMC 1100 rack but it could be off a model we didn't get in Australia like an Allegro, or it might be an 1800 or something! It dosen't look like a Viva one though. Looks like I will have to crawl under my 1100 and have a look at the numbers for you! |

Thanks for the scan of the Viva rack, I agree, it doesn't look anything like mine. The 1100 stills looks very likely. Thank you for your continued help

I can just confirm that brevetti is the Italian term for patent, maybe the steering rack comes from a car manufactured under licence in Italy....
Innocenti built both the Mini and the JM3, that must be the Italian version of the Pininfarina-designed 1964 Austin-Morris 1100. |

Thank you very much for your post, I think we may be getting closer to the answer. I have ordered an 1100 rack on sale or return to compare

Steering Rack Problem
Thank you all for your help so far. The 11 rack has not arrived yet but I have a sneaking feeling that Fausto may be right about the JM3 rack. I am attaching a pic of 2 of the cars that use the mystery rack
