Lewis Hamilton's a very promising driver. A few others such as Jason Watt (who races (successfully) with hand controls in Touring Cars but was a race winner in F3000 before beign paralysed in a bike accident) and Indian Narain Karthekayan (sp?) has a test with Jordan in 2001, have come close to F1.

Not black, but there have been quite a few non-white drivers in F1 over the years.

Nakajima, Katayama and Sato to name but a few.

If we got a few more that looked like this babe, who tried to Qualify in Adelaide one year (1990?), things would be a little less boring in F1.

Well at least thats a new photo I have not seen before, but she was NOT at Adelaide!
Re non white drivers;Japanese of course have a long heritage of racing,I know of at least 3 japanese lady racers.Black men racers are less common than white females, must be a cultural thing. The only black female I know of was the mysterious Cheryl Glass, whom I have yet to find a photo of.She committed suicide about 10 years ago(or was alegedly murdered by the CIA,according to one report!!)

Don't know what made me say Adelaide...I meant South Africa...wish I could remember the year (definitely in the 90's)...was a Brabham, and I think Hill was the next driver of the car and he couldnt qualify it either.
92...found it

The difference was Damon was only slighty outside the qualifying time.

Giovanna was miles away - several seconds slower than team-mate Eric van de Poele.

I'm surprised you take this stance, deeks6, with your very harsh appraisal of the current crop of drivers.

I think Damon qualified it twice in 7 attempts, and Eric once in 9 (although he was usually faster than Damon).

One name we haven't mentioend is B. Bira, a Thai Prince who competed in the 50s. He and Yoong are the only non white or Japanese drivers ever I believe.

How far up the motor racing ladder do you think Susie Stoddart will get, F3, GP2 maybe, at least she seems to have a decent amount of driving talent.

Susie is well-backed and I think will be in GP2 next year.

We'll have to wait and see how she does.

I don't think she's from the top-drawer of drivers, but she's no worse than some people who've been in F1 down the years.

I personally think it would be great to have a lady in F1 - it would hopefully increase the potential audience and make some young girls think that they could also do that - and hence bring in more lady drivers into club motorsport.
However what I am not keen on is any sort of token lady driver - someone who could not truly compete at this level - I think that this would only re-inforce traditional male attitudes.
I am hoping that Suzie Stoddart is at least a candidate for F1 but she still has a lot to prove and not very much time to prove it in.

I'm sure if there was a whole team run by Women with women drivers like Sara Fisher (formula woman!) it wouldn't suffer under some of the obvious faults as those run by men, (i.e there would be any silly little winglets on the sidesz of the car so that the mechanics could get the fuel hose on and off easily-thus preventing time lost in the pits) logical sort of things like that...
