Racing Number

People have various reasons for choosing their racing numbers, wereas others are given, or earn theirs.

This year I'm running #24, as it was the number my dad ran most often in his career and won his last championship on.

What is your racing number this year, or what has it been in past, and why have you chosen that number?

In my first year i was 26, that was allocated to me, but i had loads of rubbish luck (well, it's 2x 13 isn't it!) so changed it to 17, ran by that number and this year have just changed to 88, dont know what, just wanted a change. It would either be 88 or 73

My first number was #71 *our first kart was a second hand prokart and he raced as number 17, but for the next season a number 17 had already signed up so we swapped themaround*
Then for TKM 4stroke my first number was #16 (that was until i reached the supplies van and they turned out to have no #6's) so i choose #15 insted and that stuck for the rest of the year.
Now im number 3 in Super 1 (obvious reasons) and i own the '0 plate' in formula 6 (obvious reasons)

When i first started karting my number was 58. No particular reason i have that number. As with my current no. 59 no reason.

My number used to be 28, now I have been allocated 44 which is an Ok number, easy to remember.

Up north we have to have to (or are at least meant to) register our number with the ASKC (Association of Scottish Kart Clubs). When I first went to register myself in late 2000 when I started racing, I didn't have any preferences. I got allocated #74 by "the boss" Carol Blanchard, and have never raced with anything ever since

Besides, if I did have to change, I'd need to get in touch with the powers that be at 10-10ths

The number on my kart is #99 which reminds me of a driver that raced in Champcar who lost his life at Fontana California doing what he loved most.

The number will always stay but if i had to change it for whatever reason, it wll be # 27.

Greg something wasn't it?I started as number 5, cause Mansell had it, then changed to 77, then to 40, and I've run 36 since 2001. Dunno why, just have.

Greg Something you mean? I watched that race on Sky. Anyway, I ran number 5 in 1998 in Cadet, then 77 in 1999, 40 in 2000 and 36 ever since 2001.

Greg Moore, that's the one. Yeah Speedy, 1998. The good old days, f*** all technology, cheap as chips karts, like £1000 for a complete new kart, and Cadets that felt fast!!!! Yes 1998.

My first number, way too long ago, lol was #34. I was racing 80cc Superkarts at the time and it was my Sister in Laws number and as she had retired i took over the number. Then when i moved to Sydney in 1991, #34 was taken so i ran #30. I kept that until i retired in 1998. In 2004 when i returned to Karting in Rotax i used #9. It represents my birth date, lol. I also run a Pro Kart for a Sydney guy and that is #181, i think he has used that number for some 30 years, lol.....

MikeyG When you were in cadet were you no 5 in super one because i thought that if you come in the top 15 of super 1 thats what number you can run. I ran no 91 when i first started in cadet then no 90 because someone else had that number and then 97 because its what my dads number is

I'm guessing that he means at the time he was racing in non-ABkC events.

And the change cost me a grand total of £5. Eeh, karting's an expensive game...

I started in 1989!!! Bought a Cadet and picked it up from the last super 1 round that year, it came with #9, but couldn't run that, so as it came with spare numbers, ran #69. Only changed once (silverstone kart GP 1991) when I was asked to turn my plates upside down, to run #96 (you guys work it out!!)

Always ran #69 in karts, and when moved to cars, had to change to #44, and on the odd kart race i've done since I packed up in 1998, i've used #44.

Hopefully, with things going to plan this year, I'll be running #1 next season!!!

In GP Junior (2000) (What you guys call cadets, 60cc Comer W60) I first ran #81 but then everyone in our region got numbers reassigned so I ended up with #52. I carried that into 100cc Stocks (2002-2005, PCR PV50 engine). Now in Junior Max I run #452 (2005-)

If I get the choice then 79 is the number I like to run as it the year of my birth. I've always like the look of numbers that have a seven in it I think because of that brand of petrol that is sold in the USA, 76 I think it is. I was really good at my seven times tables too! If I have to use another number I'm not really bothered.

Has anybody met guys or girls who get in a huff if they can't have "their" number? I saw one guy at Shenington get really shirty with officials over this. It was funny!

I once saw some officials get funny, with me, when I ran #69. It was the cadet race at the Silverstone GP back in 1990/1 (can't remember which!) and they asked if I would run #96. This is while sat on the grid for fri practice. They guy said "just turn your plates upside down!!"

Even as an 11 year old kid, I tried to explain to him what would happen if I did that!!
