What do you actually want to know- What the above decodes as, or something else?

If it’s build plate decode you want....
ECJ Capri 1968-74
G Germany
A Cologne factory
E Capri
C 2dr Coupe
LK Built 02/71

QZ RS 2600 HC Engine
5 Manual transmission
U heavy duty axle

3Q Peppermint green metallic
AQ.... Can’t find!

But if that’s not what you we’re asking, it was an interesting exercise anyway!

Hi Mike, I’d already found the first part of the chassis number breakdown but the drive train info confirms what I thought. The interesting thing is a lot of the other early 70’s race chassis had a very similar number even though the build dates are not even close. 19998 seems fairly common so was that a factory allocated number for race cars?

AFAIK that’s just the chassis number off the line. In the UK Ford did allocate ‘batches’ of chassis numbers to the Boreham built Escorts, so it could be that the same happened in Cologne. What evidence is there that the Capri was a race car from day one, and not sold as a road car, then converted later?

Of no interest: axle ratio 3.22, AQ: trim leatherette gold/black.
Signé: Monday morning quarter back!

Hi again Mike, sorry I didn’t explain myself very well. The point I’m trying to make is that a quick internet search has come up with the chassis numbers of four confirmed Cologne Capris and they are
GAECPY 19999
GAECPB 19997
GAECNA 19997
GAECLJ 19997
There are others out there that end in 19998 so if the only thing that changes is the letter that defines the month and year. Does this mean that all race cars built at the factory had chassis numbers ending in 97,98 or 99?
This car, allegedly, was raced in Europe after being built in 1971 and then it was exported to the Ford East Africa Importer in about 1973, used at a couple of circuits in Kenya then was laid up for 40+ years.

Ah, cheers for the clarification! Looks interesting, but don’t think I’ve got any in-depth literature on Ford Germany built race cars. There may be a book or two published over there on a similar theme to ‘The Works Escorts’ that covers Capris from Cologne. That’s what’s needed!

BTW well done Gerard with the trim colour code. I couldn’t find that!

Not sure if this will help, but as we know the Cologne Capris and BMW CSL`s were designed and built by the same people, Braungart and Neerpasch. I know little about the Capris but the above numbers ring bells from my CSL knowledge. When BMW decided to homologate the CSL for Group 2 and build 1000 examples the chassis number range started at 2275001. Therefore the last chassis built to satisfy the FIA would be 2276000. The chassis numbers selected for the factory race chassis started from 2276000, the second chassis was 2275999, 2275998, 2275997, etc.....as the Capri numbers quoted above seem to include the last digits 999.998,997, etc...maybe the same system was used. It may also have had the effect of convincing the FIA that 1000 examples had been built ??

That’s very interesting Alex, I hadn’t made that connection, needs further investigations I reckon!
