I guess it doesn't have the same impact watching it on a mobile phone? There still seems to be detail missing when compared to a ps4 lap. For example, the straight from casino to Mirabeau seems too smooth, and doesn't force you to move right in that video.
That said, I imagine sticking goggles on and it may seem totally different?

The model they are using for Assetto Corsa is very old and poor. That's a downloadable mod, rather than stock content. It is pretty inaccurate like you say. I think what the poster means is the head movement adds a lot to the immersion, which is something we haven't really seen before. Or if we have seen it, it's not been at this level.

Most of us never get play motor racing. Any of us can play football for a couple of pound. But I'll take a racing game over nothing at all.

The purpose of this thread is not clear to me. If it is to talk about the advances in VR and its impact on virtual racing... then it belongs in the virtual racing forum. http://tentenths.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=60

If it is about how VR technology could be used as part of the fan experience during a "real race" (360 camera on top of car and then use a VR headset to experience the race) then this is the right place.

Richard

PS: You don't have to be a child to enjoy virtual racing!

Certainly, I know quite a few "grown ups " who spend hours doing this and am waiting for the day when it becomes part of the F1 experience in real time.

As an aside, my local golf club are building a virtual golf centre and have not the renewed the club pro's contract!

Totally off topic: a virtual golf center will not help anyone with swing flaws to correct them. It is simply a replacement of the range, but not of the pro. The virtual center will only help in strengthening the flaws.

Same would be for driving sims: it is not a replacement of the driving school, but a means of repition. Difference is: driving lines can be analyzed more easily by a computer than a golf swing.

IndyCar has used helmet cameras and they are insane! Actually, I think they show them too little in race broadcasts.

Putting 360 cameras on live broadcasts would be even more thrilling.

Wouldn't the data streaming requirements be prohibitive?

Do you mean for viewers or for the 360 camera setup?

this past winter Sauber put out a 360 video of a lap during testing...if i recall correctly they just used that 360 Keymission Nikon camera which is about $500... so the equipment to film it exists and is relatively cheap for an f1 team and putting it up on youtube is basically free.

i would imagine the Tata network can easily handle the load as they seem more than capable of providing the teams and race control with data streaming back to their respective data centres (not sure if they also handle the transmission of the world feed). plus they are talking about providing various real time solutions (VR/AR) to enhance the fan experience.

imo the infrastructure already exists but is it a service enough fans will subscribe to or pay for?

F1 viewing figures are already declining with paywalls, so I think we already know the answer to that.

I personally find the rotating cameras in IndyCar a bit distracting. I prefer the camera facing forward. But there's no denying the cool factor of recording 360 videos for YouTube and stuff.

I believe the onboard cameras are separate from the teams and race control networks.

The current camera technology I think is from gigawave, the on car broadcast unit can support several inputs/cameras but can only transmit one output/camera at a time.

l'm not sure whether it's a bandwidth issue transmitting from a car or the reception capability of the multiple receivers set around the circuit taking signals from multiple cars at the same time that is the limiting point.

What the comparative bandwidth requirement is for transmitting a 360 signal is I don't know.
