They announced the rule at the Oz GP. I can understand why they are doing it, although they could have given the drivers more notice about it.

Yep agree on this. As you say, it was brought up previously with the drivers and generally with about the same reception by Lewis. I get why the rules exist and think there needs to be a line somewhere. I do think its worth having a discussion with drivers on where the line should be.

Sainz bins it again. Might take a lot to rebuild the Ferrari before qualifying. He needs to cut out these fairly big shunts - worrying pattern.

Vettel has responded to the underwear part of the rule by wearing his pants on the outside! Hopefully he won’t do that when appears on Question Time next week!

Quite a few close calls in practice, notably between Sainz/Schumacher, Ocon/Russell and Magnussen/Ricciardo.

Vettel has always had a sense of humour and comes across as a more interesting individual than many of the others.Regarding the Hamilton jewellery situation,could the continued wearing of the hardware lead to protests from the opposition?

Why does anyone need to wear all that gear anyway? In all sports, these bands, chains etc are banned for safety and rightly so. Aldo if the engineers and fighting to save weight a watch etc will add grams.
Sadly it's just another case of Lewis being a prat, has he worn one of his carefully styles boiler suits yet?
Perhaps time for him to concentrate on supporting the team's number 1 driver?

Seems like an odd time to choose, I get them enforcing a rule that's been on the books. But choose the start of the season or returning from the summer break, that's a natural reset point. But I'm old fat white guy and think it's all garbage on both sides, lol foolish wearing it racing in a sport where engineers whinge about grams, and FIA looks like old farts worrying about it. Hopefully better minds prevail and rule enforced with allowances made for things like closed loop or other non-removable bits

Interesting point about the grams involved, though in Lewis's case it might amount to a pound. Are current F1 cars at the minimum weight limit or below and ballasted? Is the driver weight a part of the car weight, or is a heavier driver/jewelry package an add on to the car weight?

The driver and seat must weigh a minimum of 80kg. This is for driver safety, to prevent them starving themselves. Lewis is about 73kg, and driver who is under about 75kg will have ballast added to their seat.

So, in terms of the jewellery he wears, it still is under the minimum weight so he will have ballast anyway.

On the other hand, the overall car weight across the grid is so close to the minimum, that teams like Williams are running reduced liveries to save weight in their paint.

On the driver/seat weight, it's not somewhere that savings can be made.

Not to me. I'm not a Hamilton supporter, nor am I against him, but things like this only add ammunition for those who consider him to be registering an ever higher reading on the F1 pratometer.... Perhaps it's fueled by my own intense dislike of facial metalwork. It's a personal thing and I accept that in the scheme of things it's pretty unimportant, but for a guy who has slipped well down the hero to zero scale in his performances so far this season (particularly in comparison to his new teammate), he does himself no favours at all by threatening to boycott a race because he won't take his jewelery out.

It may be his personal choice, but that doesn’t mean he should be exempt from the same rules as everyone else. Just ask Djokovic what happened when he refused to comply with the same rules as everyone else.

Just remove it Lewis, it’s no big deal, I don’t think it suits you anyway

Don't know what happened to Super Max but Ferrari have a front row lock out with Leclerc on pole. Super Max is third. Bottas is 5th ahead of Hamilton.

The problem is not the track itself maybe, but once offline there seems to be no grip at all.
Practice/Qualifying is one thing, but will that be an interesting race?

I dislike it myself and am averse to it but I do recognize his argument as having some validity.
His metalwork is platinum and is therefore not a good conductor of heat so in a fire he is less likely to be suffering adverse reactions in the way that other metals would. Platinum is a good conductor of electrical energy.

If the argument is predicated by Bahrain incident perhaps the FIA should concentrate of the track safety issues that had the barrier where it was and the way it parted and allowed the Haas to travel through it.

If Hamilton is prepared to sign a waiver to take responsibility for wearing it then he should be allowed to.

The regulation is stupid because it goes too far.
If the underwear is a consideration perhaps they should supply every driver with race sets of what they consider appropriate mandated underwear and issue them with the license at the beginning of the year.

I have enjoyed the track so far. There's a fair bit of variety in turns and I thought all the sliding seemed to be creating a challenge, not just off-line, but on tyre warm-up too, I wonder whether to do with the lower pressures this year. On an out-lap they still seemed to be booting the throttle and it giving a bit of a kick in surprising places in fast corners. There is some concern about passing in the race, though.

The clumsy Turn 14/ 15 chicane is a good challenge to my eyes. Verstappen spun there near the end of FP3. It's uphill, slightly blind over the crest and you could see slightly different approaches to tackling it.

Another street track, another dangerous layout, another small mistake resulting in a 50g impact. Drivers concerns ignored.

Is it just me, or are we going backwards very quickly in terms of track safety.
