Sure. They "could" theoretically release energy whenever or wherever they want, but there are only a limited number of situations where the usage of the hybrid boost makes sense both in terms of performance and efficiency, namely mainly upon exiting corners.

At the end, please correct me if am I wrong, we have:

Audi R18:
4.0 V6 TDI powers rear wheels + ERS-K and KERS power front wheels

Porsche 919:
2.0 V4 turbo powers rear wheels + ERS-H mounted on rear + ERS-K and KERS power front wheels

Toyota TS040:
3.7 V8 NA powers rear wheels + ERS-K and KERS power rear wheels + ERS-K and KERS power front wheels

is that right ?

I do agree. I can just see teams using a touch of hybrid to get through traffic as getting back up to speed after losing speed requires fuel. Therefore getting through traffic maintaining a high speed is more important than ever.

One thing that shows the step up that Toyota have made this year is the fact that they already have a LM aero kit and a sprint package done, and are working on more aero parts. That's worlds ahead of where they were last season.
I really think that they see this year as their big opportunity to finally get a win at LM!

Not to start a F1 vs. LMP discussion, but I actually find the new F1 drivetrain (not the noses) fascinating, and a good direction for the future of F1.
Still, in WEC, the relative freedom of development and the consequently vastly different cars attending the new season, boasts for probably a far more exciting fight.

Indeed. If ever Audi had a strong competitor, besides the grand efforts Peugeot made against them, it's this year with Toyota. My money is on the Japanese team this year!

Yes if in the meanwhile Porsche and Toyota don't also change... or even Audi again...

When must it be set in stone ? After the first official (Paul Ricard) test practice (before Silverstone) ?... Toyota and or Porsche might yet surprise...

You need to add the fuel type and its energy density. Obviously, Audi did so.

Of course this is the absolute minimum time. They can always release it more slowly.
Good calculations, if were going by their output baseline of 300hp last year for ~2.2 seconds per release (x7 zones) and no gains were made it would equal about 16.5 seconds at full power (480hp) of hybrid boost. They did say that they made it more efficient, so 17+ seconds at that power vs. ~15 seconds @300hp is a huge bump in power and a little bit more time.

If they were to do 300hp of boost between the two like last year's cars output, it would equal around 25 seconds per lap at Le Mans of that level! Thats exciting

Toyota already did a endurance test.
Quote:
As yet, the three Toyota crews in action at Le Castellet have had no opportunity to drive the new car in traffic, so this weekend’s ‘Prologue’ test in the south of France will give them a chance to analyse fuel consumption with other cars on the track.

To date, Toyota Racing has covered 18,000km in testing since January, including a 30-hour run at Aragon, Spain. The Japanese team seems quietly confident ahead of the year’s energy-efficiency challenge and is convinced it has chosen the best technological solution.

An interesting fact is revealed in http://www.endurance-info.com/fr/ste...-etre-patient/

The driver shuffle between the #7 and #8 car has to size and weight. In this way, 3 kg can be saved on the seat insert

The stuff is actually quite dense. It's a bit like pillow seats in wheelchairs. Very comfortable. This kind of foam also envelops the back and butt of the drivers in a perfect way and supports it well when spending many hours in them.

I had not noticed this earlier, but the TS040 has mandatory air extractors on the inside at the rear.

http://www.motorsport-total.com/wec/...-14032805.html contains some additional technical information.

According to John Litjens the complete hybrid system is around 30% heavier than last year. He is happy that they are under the minimum weight. Because supercapacitors are such a heavy technology, they could not go for the 8 MJ option.

All drivers needed half a day to get used to the recuperation on the front axle.

Most of their drivers left brake. This is not ideal for fuel consumption because the accelerator and brake pedal are pressed simultaneously, burning precious petrol. So the drivers need to be aware of this.

30% heavier looks like a lot and one may wonder if Toyota have much ability to play with ballast and influence the car's weight distribution. Interesting.
