That was always a long shot that MG Rover, Chilton probably felt relieved he didn’t have to do it. The DTM wasn’t great at the time, so it was probably for the best. At least they had a plan though. Although it could have ended a few careers if it happened, like Reid. He at least came back to the BTCC eventually. And Johnny Herbert was probably proposed for the publicity

I do remember Autosport mentioning Herbert as being one of the most likely candidates until Chilton was hired.

What? It was probably one of the strongest fields in any touring car series in any year ever.

Ekstrom - DTM Champion
Tomczyk - DTM Champion
Kristensen - Le Mans Legend
McNish - F1 Driver / Le Mans Series Champion
Abt - Le Mans Podium Finisher
Kaffer - Le Mans Class Winner
Capello - 3x Le Mans Winner
Stippler - FIA GT Race Winner
Paffett - DTM Champion
Alesi - F1 Race Winner
Schneider - 4x DTM Champion
Hakkinen - 2x F1 Champion
Mucke - FIA WEC Class Race Winner
Margaritis - Well they can't all be winners
Spengler - DTM Champion
Green - DTM Runner-up & Euro F3 Champion
Fassler - 3x Le Mans Winner
Frentzen - F1 Race Winner
Aiello - DTM Champion, BTCC Champion & Le Mans Winner
Reuter - ITC Champion

Honestly it's probably one of the strongest fields of drivers ever assembled. I would argue it's overall strength in depth exceeded even Formula 1 that year.

There was a rumour linking MG Rover to Andy Rouse's stillborn SCV8 Series in 2004.

That was a failed attempt. I have a lot of respect for Andy Rouse, but when Gow retook over the BTCC at the time, it looked unlikely to happen

Richard Göransson tested for Mercedes in DTM and was quicker than Häkkinen, but it was Häkkinen Mercedes signed.

James Thompson was supposedly going to follow Alain Menu to the DTM in 2001? Am I right?

I think SEAT made a concept car for the TC1 regulations in WTCC

If the SCV8 Series had gone ahead, the following would have been potential entries:

Team Dynamics Racing/Jaguar X-Type
Team Varta/Vauxhall Vectra
Vic Lee Motorsport/Peugeot 407

Wasn't Andy Rouse strongly linked to a works Mercedes for the 1990 DTM, after he lost his Kaliber backing in the BTCC?

He did a few rounds in an Abt TT in 2000 - that was a bit of a shambles - did that put him off going back for 2001?

I just know Jimmy T was originally going to switch to the DTM for 2001 but that fell through and he ended up returning to Vauxhall in the BTCC.

Reid also considered switching to the DTM before joining MG.

https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/january-1994/58/korea-prospects - It says Hyundai were seriously considering entering a works team in the 1992 BTCC.

Not quite what it says (to be pedantic).

'there was talk that Hyundai was considering a works British Touring Car Championship programme' - was the talk in the company, or outsiders?

It doesn't say, it just briefly says there were talks and that's about it, presumably it was the company.

I guess it may have been the company - but I suspect equally as likely a journalist's talk to generate column inches.

I could quite easily run a story today and mention that there is talk about Kia and Volvo in the BTCC. Problem is, most of it is in the rumours thread(s) here.

https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/january-1993/33/full-team-ahead

At the bottom, it mentions Roberto Ravaglia instead of Winkelhock as a possible BMW driver for 1993, as well as another mention of Hyundai.

The ETCC originally looked into adopting the BTC-Touring regs before switching to Super 2000.
