Nice bit of detective work there! The 3rd pic of rear looks the same- (as near as........)
Who's car was it when those pics were taken? |

Thanks for posting the pictures Dan.
It was built by my brother Chris and me from an unused Broadspeed shell acquired when Broadspeed sold off a lot of stuff in 1974/75. We raced it first with a 1800cc BDA (first race at the 1975 British GP Supersaloon race) then with a 1970cc FVC until the end of 1977. The car was then laid up until the 80s when it was bought, less engine, by Stuart Oliver in Carlisle. He painted it in Castrol colours but sold it a couple of years later to a guy in Ireland. Pic 4 is as the car was first built at the British GP meeting in July, 1975. Pic 1 is Brands in 1977 and pic 2 is Oulton Park in either 1975 or 1976. Not sure where pic 3 was taken but it shows Chris with the car in 1977 and it looks as if it was wet. |

The caption on the back of the photos say Oulton was '76 and the one taken in the wet with Chris in says Silverstone '77 - but it doesn't look particularly Silverstone-like to me. Brands or Oulton again maybe?

Well then, I'm happy to share some photos of a nice Escort!
Very sadly, we never got our share of Escorts in North America. The best one I've seen here so far mainly races around Ontario, but I'm told its career started in New Zealand where Mike Marshall drove it in the 1973 Heatway Rally for the Woolmark Ford team: Walter Davies' 1971 Escort RS1600 Vintage Race Car (The article includes 55 photos, mostly of construction details.) I'm new to Escorts. Please send me a PM if you spot any errors or dubious information in my write-up. I'll be happy to make corrections. |

There are one or two inaccuracies in your Escort model history but I'll pm you on that. BTW love the 'remove before flight' pull tag attached to the fire extinguisher pin. I want one!!!! |

I am familiar with Mike Marshall Escorts in NZ, in 1973 he was going to use Ford owned XPU217L, but since there was no time to convert to RHD, Ford leased Mikes own RHD RS1600 escort from him for him to drive, they fitted the runnig gear out of XPU for this event. He did not drive XPU218L. The car Mike drove in the 1973 Heatway is owned by Peter Bryant in Whangarei NZ. XPU217L was restored by a freind of mine and solld to Australia. This car is not an RS1600 as it has a Ford NZ chassis tag(RS1600 only assenbled in UK)and doesn't even have remotely the right chassis numbers.

Hi Pete, if you are talking about UK historic rallying then the whole thing is under control of MSA and the Historic Rally Car Register. The latter have a technical website that may help. Here's the link- HRCT

No problem Pete. The HRCR are very upfront (and strict) about what can and can't be used on different cars. Comes down to ''if it wasn't used in period, you can't use it now.' Sometimes think historic racing could follow that ethos a bit more!
Good luck with the Lucas inj- I know most stuff is available new now but old or new it aint cheap! Happy Christmas! |

Need evidence for usage of coilover on Escort mk1 group 2
Hi, I'm seeking evidence that coilover suspension on the rear axle was used on the Escort mk1 RS1600 in period g2 (1970 - 1971).
Someone that can help me? Avo |

I am sure I read somewhere they didnt use coil overs but slipper springs. Or was it they used a spring like a a piece of flat tin with coil over 'assisters'?

Gp.2 regulations allowed the use of additional mounting points, suspension members, and supplementary springing, but did require the retention of all original mounting points and the original form of springing, so Ralph's cars used a nylon leaf spring which had no practical springing effect in order to comply with the regulations. I hope this helps! |

Hi Avo (welcome to the forum!) are you looking for evidence to support an HTP or some national paperwork? As said already, we know that Broadspeed used 105E setup with coil springs for Gp5 then coilovers with dummy leaf springs for Gp2, but presume you want pictures or some period evidence to prove this?
I will look through couple of books on the subject, meanwhile if anyone else can lay there hand on pics etc please do so! |
