What is it with VESA trying to convince each state they can replicate the success of the Clipsal 500.

Anybody who has ever said V8 Supercars are about helping motorsport in this country have no credibility whatsoever.

Been mooted for ages - too many forces against it ; Hope it's another slap in the face for VESA . Far better to spend the $$ on a permanent circuit .

Would this round replace the one at Barbagello or will we get a second in WA? That would be cool.

It's bad enough to have Mr Cochrane bleating long and loud about how Governments should be tipping in money towards these street races.
Now we have a steady stream of entrepreneurs (who is this Michael Rasheed bloke anyway?) doing the same thing... From memory there is a band of investors in Townsville trying the same deal. Not to mention Sydney Or Hamilton. Or even Cronulla a few years ago. Seems to be Cochrane's latest modus operandi. Get some overfinanced, underinformed businessman to do the bidding for you so you don't appear in the press constantly baying for taxpayers money... |

damage to WA motor sport
Quote:
The WA Government were an obvious target for VESA, having been rejected earlier with taxpayers money being spent on the WRC with a more international audience. I hope WA motor sport plays tough on this - who is going to provide the admin (yep CAMS nationally do have a conflict of interest), the flaggies, the support categories? Michael Rasheed: hasnt he punted HQs? |

How many people can you fit into Barbagallo ? 10 - 15 thousand on a good day ? It's all about bringing in as many people as you can. A street race would potentially bring in 10 times that many.
You can't blame VE$A for doing this. I'd love a business where govt tips in the money and I take the profits. It's a no brainer. |

You can add Sandown to the list of self promoted events... through IMG. I'm not sure who promotes Darwin, anyone give me the heads up on that one?
Quick, someone do the sums....how many Aussie circiuts can afford to host a round of V8s? I guess after they find the money to build the street circuit they're going to need to find a small army of local cams officals to run the place. They use around 700 marshals at The Clipsal but SAMRAO could run Mallallalla with two men and a ute. |

I believe the WASCC own Barbagallo/promote the WA round, Linfox own Philip Island & I understand VESA promote the V8 round - what is the connection between IMG & VESA? How many owners/promoters with Davo going at Sandown? |

What am I saying?
I'm saying Davo is not the promoter of the Sandown 500, IMG are the promoters. Davo rents the track to IMG for the weekend. It belongs to them to use as they see fit and if Davo wants to use the track for marching bands, burnouts or easternat displays he has to buy the time off from IMG just like anyone else. The connection between IMG and VESA goes right back to the begining of TEGA/AVESCO/SEL. Google it. |

Here ya go.....a cut and paste history lesson..
1996: Formation of AVESCO Fans may whinge about AVESCO's handling of their beloved V8s, but realistically, had the organising body not surfaced, the category would have died a slow death. By season 1996, the 5-litre touring car category, which had oddly adopted the 'Group A' tag of its predecessor upon birth, was popular with diehard fans, but virtually unseen by the general public. Before the rot set in, CAMS and the V8 team owners, fearing that their investments may become worthless, decided to hand over the class's marketing to a specialist sports-management company. In a rare instance of co-operation, the teams banded together for a common good, and jumped into bed with the International Management Group (IMG). A business model was agreed upon and AVESCO was formed, jointly owned by the teams, IMG and (for a few years) CAMS. Later IMG's stake passed to offshoot Sports and Entertainment Limited (SEL). The first item on AVESCO's agenda was to come up with a better television package, and a new name. In late 1996, the term V8 Supercar was adopted, replacing a confusing myriad of monikers including combinations of 'touring cars', 'Group A', and '5-litres'. |

what about today
Thanks for the history lesson - I was aware James Erskine ran IMG & his sidekick was there also last century.
I was asking about today, strictly a commercial relationship??? Did Avesco/Vesa oust IMG from promoting Bathurst? MPA, you seemed to infer they were in bed so to speak - yes/no? IMG would seem to have lost out in their dealings with SEL, hardly likely to endear their former employees to them. Last edited by cavvy; 24 Dec 2006 at 02:39. |

Maybe the black wiggle has examined that WA is one of the richest states at moment with the mining boom and see's this as an opportunity to milk more money out of them.
Tony is probably rubbing his hands together with all the cashed up bogans over there at the moment. |

Since there making a street race for 2008 do you think they will keep the Barbagallo Racetrack and make up more rounds for the championship. You never no we might have 16 by the end of 2008.
