As far as I know, that's still the rule today. That's why DTM isn't actually a national championship (Meisterschaft), instead they call themselves Masters.

That was before it hit the self destruct button of the ITC. IIRC, Neal, Khan and possibly Pinkney raced in that race. Thanks for the upload, the circuits and the cars looked so simpler in those days
