More from the PI meeting in 2016.
On board footage in the Group N race, from an Escort Twincam. He started 42nd on the grid (after a DNF in the previous race) and in the 6 lap race got up to 10th
Note to Gérard... at the start you will see an unusual racecar.... a Citroen Traction 11!

Well done E.B, I can't tell you if its a 11 Légère or may be a 15. But has a lot of neg camber at front. The Escort driver must be good for sure.
I was wondering what kind of wipers are mounted… Trico?
I hope the european instances will do something to check those Mazdas. They are way too fast! Are we sure the camshaft are Group N compliant…

Are they still making Cortinas in your area??? Or all the good ones have been sent over the years. I see more of them in this race than during five seasons in France! If not ten…

See the size of F1 hospitalities now? What about going back to the real thing, when catering was "a little bit" more relaxed? Minute 5'25 of the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBzgRT2AIys

The owner of the Citroen, Mick Stupka is a member of our club, and he enters it as an 11D.
Built in 1954
Upgraded for racing in the 60s. Raced until the early 70s when regs changed.
After some years racing sat idle for 30 years till Mick bought it.
Front-wheel drive, but engine is still north/south with gearbox ahead of the engine.

He says the Citroen feels different on every lap as things heat up, the brakes fade and other things change. Mick has been racing it for a decade now I would say.... he previously raced a Volvo Amazon.

We still have many Cortinas racing, although the 2 door is fairly scarce here. The GTs were sold here mainly in 4 door format. Our weather means rust is not generally much of a problem. No we dont still make them here In fact both Ford and Holden make no saloon cars locally now.... the nearest to manufacture is assembly of imported components. This week Holden announced the discontinuation of even the Commodore (currently that is an Opel Insignia with Holden badges, which have not sold well. The majority of vehicles sold now for family use are these 4 door trucks/utes.

Not sure of the wipers and yes the Mazdas are quick. Our regs for Group N here are the old Australian Appendix J regs which allow certain freedoms.... Under Appendix J, eligibility was restricted to closed cars with seating for four persons and at least one hundred examples of the model had to have been produced. Bodywork had to remain virtually standard (we can now use race seats), however, engines and suspensions could be modified to improve performance and handling. Modifications were permitted in the areas of carburettors, valves, pistons, camshafts, inlet systems, exhaust systems, springs and shock absorbers (same style / method of operation). Brakes original size and format ie discs / drums.etc

Oh yes thanks for posting the Maserati with Fangio.... seen it before but not for a long time.... good to see it again. Not sure the helmets would get the necessary FIA sticker nowadays!

I noticed the Escort TC had ‘wood’ (plastic) trim, any idea if that was how Twinks were sold down under? They had base model trim and seats over here!

I know the Twincams sold here were (in Mk1 form anyway, not checked later) actually made here by Ford Australia. Apparently obviously for duty purposes Ford claimed local sourcing bringing the Australian content of the vehicles to 85 per cent, so maybe a bit of plastic eucalyptus crept into local production.

https://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.a...identification.

I also know that in late 1971 they were marketed here not as a Twincam but as an Escort 1600GT (Twincam). (800 TCs in total were built here, 216 of them sold as 1600GT TCs) The main reason for the rename to 1600GT was for insurance purposes, ie addressing the high premiums of an Escort Twincam from what I hear. Mind you what is the difference between an Escort Twincam and an Escort GT Twincam?

Re the dash I looked for some pictures of local cars to see what they had. Unfortunately a local one for sale had no dash pic, but it did show plastic wood on the door trims.... plus an interior that doesnt look like base. Actually a second look at one of the exterior pics looks like the dash is not wood, but could be my eyes!

http://www.my105.com/ListingDetails/id/4803

Of course for race cars here it wouldnt be the first time in the Group N class (which allows recreations as opposed to demanding original race cars) that a standard 2 door had been made to look like a Twincam!

Edit: Just found another Aussie produced Twincam, and this one definitely has no wood on the instrument console.... but does across the dash (Heater surround etc.) as per the one in the clip. Again the seats look reasonable and not basic Escort style. So my belief is that no wood on the instrument panel, but wood across the dash in Aussie cars.
https://www.classicdriver.com/en/car...rt/1972/564685

Summary Mike..... I dunno, happy to be corrected.

Mike, another Aussie TC with wooden door trims and dash but 'alluminium' instrument binnacle. Again this one has the Recaro like seats.

Thanks for all the research! There were a lot of detail differences on most Ford models between the Oz production and here, so a bit of a minefield. By 1972 the RS1600 had replaced the TC here anyway, but it still came with base model seats and trim. Only upgrade was the RS steering wheel, Ford’s logic being that most were going to be rally cars so the trim was likely to be abused and the seats swapped.... The specialist RS dealers made a bit extra by selling Ford accessory (Contour) rally seats- buckets and / or recliners- to the new owners. My car has a pair, fitted by the supplying dealer before delivery in ‘72.

Anyway, apologies for going off topic!

Thanks for all the info directly related to the topic, E.B!
I just wonder if the aussie Recaros are covered with kangaroo skin?
As to the Citroën, I guess the trim is different from the french one, at least, I could detail one belonging to Citroën Heritage, all the metal parts, dash and upper door skins for instance, were painted with look alike wood. Like a Facel Vega if you see what I mean? This 11 is obviously one of the last produced looking at the wiper arrangement (not on the roof). Probably at one time, it was possible to open the windshield. It looks very agressive!

E.B, I think I have something interesting for your Stukka friend. If you go to the end of the long, serious and well documented article, you'll find "Les préparateurs" and can read about Georges Regembeau and his fantastic 15 Six. I drove a lot of Tractions, wrote about them, but thanks to you its the first time I read this… I know your french is perfect and may be you can find a good translation. Really worth a watch.

I am sure we have all seen this one before, but in case some have not I thought it should have a place here anyway. I still enjoy it despite many prior viewings. This version alone has over a million views so clearly I am not the only one!

Great man, great car, great track. Funny seeing him driving pretty hard whilst avoiding the cyclists and road traffic.... the track was not closed back then for practice days. during practice.

Always worth a watch. This makes me think about great contributors we have here. A tout seigneur, tout honneur, lets start with Mike:
Can you guess what was the cyclist thinking, in French?
rbs:Can you name the cyclist?
Bauble: what is the brand name of the frame used?

PS/ You mean Hawthorn, do you?

I've never bothered filming any races, but a few years ago Arthur set up his go-pro in the Cortina at Spa . . . highly unremarkable viewing watching an underpowered (140BHP) car on a long F1 circuit, although I did just creep into the 3:13's according to Harry lap timer, which is a PB.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUbjZjtl4jA

we did 'suspension cam' testing a few years ago as well . . . not sure we were supposed to, but no one got hurt and we learned a few things . . . . namely that most dampers on the market are not very good so we had a pair made!
