Yeh, I guess so.

I was just thinking a little 'bigger picture', I guess. But the teams really do need to look after number 1 at this time, which is almost a shame, as I really feel they need to be banding together and making a statement that this is not feasible.

sauber are skint. worth remembering that it's much more difficult to run up caterham sized debts in germany and switzerland because of the business culture, and there's also different rules about going into receivership etc. so i guess we need someone who understands that system to comment before we can begin to speculate too much.

Where will the 'real' sponsors of these two end up? Mr Chilton & Mr Ericsson were always reported to be contributing significantly to the operating budgets of these teams...

...will they be moving up the grid into the Sauber-zone?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Bernie needs to stop taking it all out of the sport and leave enough in for the teams and the circuits, particularly the lower order ones struggling. At this rate there won't be F1 but at least BCE can finally retire and count his money instead.

Isn't that somewhat irrelevant?

I like Formula 1, and Formula 1 needs teams, no matter what the guise.

Also, those rumours on no Force India can't surely be true? If they are, fair play. Seems as though the floodgates have opened.

It'd certainly send a message to one Bernie Ecclestone, that's for sure. At least he'd have to put that fat wad of money where his mouth is! You don't want the teams at the back? Fine. Try explaining to the circuits why you only have a minus 20 grid!

I'm surprised the BE is so glib to be honest, I thought he was desperate for F1 to gain some real ground in the USA, which was why I half expected him to keep both teams on the grid for Austin and then let them wither...

As it stand surely the talking point in Austin will be the demise of the teams and problems with F1, hardly a great platform to attract US brands into F1.

if it was any other sport i'd say nah, the spin doctors will have everyone believing that they've just weeded out the unsustainable teams and whats left is a solid viable set of competitors in it for the long term. unfortunately this is f1, and nobody's really steering the ship....

Mr Saward seems to be suggesting in the link above (which was added to by him just now) that the boys & girls at Manor may be looking to take over the entrants licence and technical crew of Caterham, and go again..

Wonder if the 'US backers' being mentioned are real, or fanciful wishful thinking

sounded a bit hypothetical to be honest. i'm not sure getting hold of the caterham assets would be worth doing.

i'm still not totally sure i understand where this leaves the various entrants licences, and i *really* hope graeme lowdon has a future in the sport somewhere.

I don't think Austin and Eccelstone are getting on as well they might. The first race was a smash hit but I've read that subsequent races have seen the Austin people get burnt a little bit. It could be the reason behind the recent Las Vegas publicity stir. Eccelstone's shot across the Austin bow perhaps.

In any event two teams getting beached so publicly at this point in time is the worst time with the other teams trying to nail down sponsorship. Never mind getting new sponsors, such bad publicity could cause minor sponsorship flight of existing sponsors. Not good for Force India, Lotus, Sauber who are reportedly in grim financial difficulties.

Really, it's unlikely all three teams will capsize of course but by equal measure one might say it's odds on, one of those teams will go under next year.

I doubt it's that simple but if CVC really have taken a huge amount of money from F1 over the years then it's time to give back to the sport that's probably paid for their yachts and private jets.
