Alcohol Sponsorship + Formula One = ???

Hi all,

last year a few teams who were sponsored by alcohol companies, rebuked their sponsorship for the Bahrain round due to alcohol being illegal/improper in Muslim nations.

However, i just came across this picture (look under the incar camera):

Well, it's not like Budweiser is alcohol, all American beer is **** (from what I've heard, still 5 years off the drinking age here).

Alcohol advertising on cars should be banned full stop, it sets a bad example. It's akin to Steroids being advertised on athletes!

I'd be more concerned about the large connection between football and alcohol, considering that football fans are much more notorious for acting like thuggish morons when drunk than F1 fans (as a rule). The drunk driving message does need to ge thtrough thoguh, the British Superbike championship had backing from the Think! initiative which encourages sensibel road use last season, which was a good idea.

I fear the alcohol advertising will be the next form of sponsorship to be banned when tobacco is out of the way.

I hate how this world is turning into wrapping it's citizens up in cotton wool, I've grown up watching tobacco sponsored F1 and I've never felt the need to light up. Nor does any alcohol make me more likely to drink.

In sunny Australia, id say about 5 (or more) of the teams are supported by alcohol companies.... including Sirromet Motorsport (sirromet is a brand of wine).

Not forgetting fast food outlets which the nanny state see as the next big evil If it's legal then let them advertise it.

No, not at all. One is illegal, the other not. One makes you faster the other not. One is for the competitors the other for the public watching.

That's exactly my thought on the whole thing. Why should companies be penalised simply because a section of their customers are stupid enough to misabuse their product?

AA - "One is illegal, the other not."

Steroids are perfectly legal just not in athletics.
Just as Alcohol is legal but not when driving.

I also agree with touringlegend. Alcohol shouldn't be encouraged in Football.

Yes, the are legal generally. However the situation is different, steroids aren't advertised for general use. In addition the competing athlete can't use steroids at all, but the drivers can drink alcohol, just not at a GP! You have to give people credit to realise that you can drink, you can drive you just can't drink and drive at the same time.

If you treat people as stupid all the time they will be stupid.

Different but similar. If you over analise a topic then you would need a very comlex set of rules. I am saying that simply put anything that implies a link to something illegal shouldn't be encouraged. So Drink and Driving is a No No but Snooker seems more apropriate. It should be remembered that the main victims of advertising are kids. I don't think the kind of irrisponsible advertising that exists in society helped our generation one single bit leading to a general dumbing down. Hopefully we can begin to rectify this for future generations.

Implies a link? That doesn't sound simply at all. What is a link? Mobile phones on the side of race cars - well you shouldn't drive and talk on one!

In addition the GP cas are travelling very fast, quite often involves tailgaiting and they have no indicators. By a very similar arguement we should ban motorsport because it encourages driving fast.

Teach people to understand. That is far better than the just banning something so that you don't have to teach them well.

Oh and buy beer it is great.

No what leads to dumbing down is removing people's responsibility to think for themselves and make their own informed decisions. Things like 'Speed Kills' or banning tobacco/alcohol/fast food adverts are prime examples as are some of the laws governing Health and Safety, etc.

I'm not arguing to ban it. Just advertising it.

And Yes, mobile companies should be banned aswell.

As for Motorsport, a speed limit would help (har d har)

How come Marlboro and co, are banned from advertising at some races on the cars, for examle Silverstone, yet they have an advertisement board up, by the race track, in view when the Camera looks down the Hangar straight, I think it's placed In Becketts.

Back to the topic, it would be a shame IMO, to have Alochol removed from the cars. Would races still be called the Fosters Australian / British Grand Prix?

i dont know what is like in europe, but in canada alcohol companies spend alot of money advertising programs aimed at reducing drinking and driving(certainly more than cig companies spend on keeping people from smoking) they do this because its the responsible thing to do. as long as they maintain this as part of their advertising campaign why not let them advertise on cars. besides, if you are going to sell booze at events, it think that means they are already advertising it, let the teams make some cash too.
