Are Renault running a hybrid as well? or are they on 04 specifications?

pizzonia over 1 second slower than webber then. i know it's testing and you can't read too much into it but that's still a big gap.

I think Antonio had some mechanical gremlins but having said that I think Nick is looking too good.

Pizzo has called this the most important month of his career, and he is driving like it. Today's gap is minimal and I'm certain at this point that he and Nick will be driving the same specs:
4. Nick Heidfeld (Williams BMW) - 1'17"036 - 146 laps 5. Antonio Pizzonia (Williams BMW) - 1'17"165 - 94 laps |

Look - Raikkonen was 0.1 faster in their first test together.
That's Montoya's career over. [ /SARCASM OFF ] |

Don't underestimate Kimi, its 0.132 faster.
The anticipation of these two running with no team orders is quite exciting. |

Just under 2 secs between more or less 2004 spec v early running of 2005 spec, I suspect it will be less by the time we get to Melbourne.

But everyone at that test will be running on the same spec tyres, potentially, rather than 2004 cars on 2004 tyres and 2005 cars on 2005 tyres - that will account for a slightly bigger deficit between last year to this in terms of average race pace.

I don't know what to make of the Williams duo there. I still like Nick, but the fact that Pizzonia is so close to him might save the Brazilian.
Williams has been very loyal to Pizzonia, and that could certainly play in his favour. |

Pizzonia did nothing to impress while at Jaguar regardless of whatever team oriented stuff was going on. He also didn't do much in the few '04 races he did.
I'd like to see Heidfeld get the nod. He and Webber could do a lot to develop the '05 Williams. |

I'll admit I'm a Toyota fan and seeing them at the top of testing is enough to make me declare them 2005 WCC |

I don't buy all the rhetoric about 'it's up to Frank', if I were writing out a cheque for $150M investment in Williams per year and one of the key things on getting a return on it is the drivers - I would want a heavy say in it! If they are evenly matched then other factors like Pizzonia's performance relative to Webber at Jaguar, his lack of race experience relative to Heidfeld and a question mark over his mental fragility will count against him. In other words, Pizzonia is a bigger overall risk, when Williams cannot afford another year like 2004. |

At the end of the day, both Williams and BMW want the fastest driver - it's not a matter of who pays what.
They both want the best results, and as Nick appears to have been quicker, he should end up with the drive. |
