Least favourite sounding engine
We have another thread titeled atmo or turbo . I just thought it would be interesting to see what people have to say about their least favourite engine sound ?
I thought the old Group C2 Spice's were nice little cars but that Ford DFV they had in the back was just a vile sounding thing !!! |

same for the AER straight four. I hope the new v8 turbos from AER and Cosworth will sound better

The mugens that were run in the panzo a few years back. They hurt your ears to badly to sound good.

The Mazda GTP that ran at the Daytona 24hrs back in the late 80's (maybe early 90's). IIRC it was the "big" 3-rotor version. That thing sounded like a giant mosquito and would shake your brain every time the horrible thing went by.

V10's and any V8 with a flat plane crank (most bespoke racing engines!).

The Mazdas have always been right on the pain threshold, but it's pain in a (nearly) good way
The Audis and Bentleys have always sounded curiously uninspiring for such superb engines -- some combination of turbos and exhausts seems to rob them of a 'voice', but the (relatively!) very quiet passage of the cars is impressive... Agree that the 360 sounds like a bag of spanners. Possibly one of the most "mechanical" sounding engines.... |

After the weekend I can now safely say either the R8 or the Ford's in the Belmondo LMP's. The Judd's, however, are awe-inspiring, and I actually don't mind the 360's. But the R8 is just too quiet for a sportscar race, although I agree with Aysedasi that it sounds better on it's limiter. Worst noise for a GT car is probably the Viper. Too quiet and "average" sounding. For pain, the TVR's are almost there, but I like the sound anyway!

I personally thought the 'Vette rumble was amongst the best, particularly when you really do FEEL it as well as hear it

It feels good sat in the start/finish grandstand at Donny when it goes past but I just think it is a dullish sound.

Audi/Bentley/AER
I think the Viper sounds cool, but then again there is only one really racing in the states anymore at top level competition. |

Yeah , the Viper does sound cool . I remember a Mike Colucci Racing Corvette C5 from a few years back at Le Mans (mid 1990's) . It looked awful and sounded even worse if thats possible . But it did grab class pole !!!

For me the worst sounding engines are the GT2 Porsche 911s. When you are standing close to the track (ie Arnage) they make a really painful buzz as they go past. They are the only reason I ever where earplugs. Nasty little things anyway - like an annoying buzzing wasp that won't go away. I dream of the day when something else wins that class.

Porsche GT2s are pretty painful. The 360s sound so bad you think they're going to break very soon.
On the other hand, I've always liked the sound of the Saleens and the Lister was fantastic on Saturday - Really evil! |

The Porsches are kinda painful to the ear - there's never just the one either, they gotta come past in a bunch of like 5 or 6!
I did very much like the evil rumble from the lister - although personally I prefer the note from their Jag V12 Storm GT car |

The 360s, GT3RSRs and especially the LNT TVRs do sound painful after a while, but I'd rather hear them in LMES spec than British GT spec, where they sound too quiet.

Yeah - least favourite sounding cars - anything in British GT!! was nice to see the likes of the Morgan in action, but quite what some of those Porsche Cup cars (not to mention the Monaro) are doing in GT racing is beyond me...

if the new Cosworth engine sound like the Nasamax Cosworth engine use to sound, well will be great, it sound pretty like a Champcar!!!
The ones i remember a lot from my childhood was the Ford-Cosworths DFR engines mounted on the Spices in the late 80's early 90's, they use to sound so great!!! Also remember a lot how the Mercedes-Benz V-10 engines use to sound in the Mercedes C291, great sound, very diferent from the Peugeots and Cosworths from the Jaguar cars, even from Judds |
