RIP Dan Gurney
One of the greatest Americans and American racers of all time. He did just a little bit of everything and did everything well. He'll certainly be missed but made his mark everywhere in racing. I'm not sure what else to say about him that everyone should already know.
Condolences to his family and friends. Last edited by fieldodreams79; 15 Jan 2018 at 01:17. |

Terribly sad day for American Motorsport.
Although I was born well after his glory days of Formula 1, I found him to be one of my favorite of the "Old Breed", if you will, of true American Racing Icons, partly because of his brilliant AAR Eagle T1G and equally as brilliant win at Le Mans w/ AJ Foyt in '67. He will be missed tremendously! |

Argies are thankful with him due to opportunities he gave to Fangio's nephew, specially at IMSA.
A truly American racer. Will be missed. |

R.I.P DAN GURNEY.
I appreciate that this Forum has little to do with actual motor racing history but I feel that the sad death of Dan Gurney one of the sports finest drivers and nicest men should not go unnoticed.

A truly great driver. The one driver Jim Clark said he only ever feared and I don't think you can get much higher praise than that. No doubt would have been a double champion had he stayed with Brabham. A great team owner too. And we have a lot of things to thank for him, like champagne spraying, full face helmets and gurney flaps. He's had a great life and will be missed. RIP to a true gentleman

Yes, the thread can be moved to ‘tributes’. RIP another great name from my early days of following motorsport.....

Le Mans 1967
Definitely one of the top 5 American racer of all times.
Everybody will remember him spraying champagne over Mr and Mrs Ford after winning Le Mans 1967 with AJ Foyt as co driver. He drove many cars in many different categories, Enzo Ferrari spoke very highly about him. R.I.P. |

Read a great article this morning about Dan's early days of motoring after his family moved to California, where he got started into racing as a Hot Rodder. He built cars from junk parts, would be recruited to drive others' cars because of his abilities and there's racing on SAC bases involved - the essence of post war motor racing!
http://www.hotrod.com/articles/0709sr-dan-gurney/ There wasn't much he didn't on 4 wheels... Think we can get a merge of the two threads?? |

A true legend of the sport. One of those names that will resonate with motor racing fans over a huge expanse of years, whether they are fans of F1, Indycars or sportscars. Always associated in my mind somewhat ironically not with Le Mans, but with that most beautiful of Formula 1 cars, the Eagle. RIP to an icon.

My earliest memory of auto racing was a short TV segment/snippet of the Mexico GP with Dan Gurney racing Richie Ginther FTW.
A later memory of Gurney was him saying he retired when he could count 50 friends that died racing. Different days/different world. The man invented champagne spraying! He said it was because it was a hot day. I have always wondered if he wasn't just a bit p.o.'ed that he had tried 10 times, while AJ Foyt treated it like a Toyota Celebrity Race. When USAC/Indycar had belatedly figured out which end of the car to put the motor in; and more quickly discovered aero, there was some chatter about US open wheel cars being inferior to GP. Gurney said he would bring his driver in his Eagle and $100,000 to the Ring. Lotta noise but no takers... Currently on backup deVICE lacking access to great pic of Gurney and AJ just a couple years ago... RIP |

Glad to see the international respect for Dan.
I had forgotten this and it goes without saying that the likes of Dan, Jackie, Phil and many others had to have some luck on their side during that time. |

The Marshall Pruett Podcast:Remembering Dan Gurney
I'm bit late with this but some might find it interesting; Marshall Pruett put together a tribute to Dan Gurney. It can be found here; it's a whopping 3hrs long but well worth listening. The story of the aftermath of the Spa 67 GP victory were new to me.

Sad day..I've just read all this..
Remember him at Brands when I was in nappies..late 50's. A "celeb" race with Jim Clark, Innes Ireland, Graham Hill and Dan Gurney plus others all in Ford Galaxies. One of the best racers I've ever seen... |
