Stock car vs. STOCK car
What interchangeagle parts, if any, could be found on a Nextel Cup car which could actually be found on a production car with the same name??
I know there are very few and its a dumb question, but are the manufacturers only paying for the advertising and they use of the 'shape' of the bodywork? Bob Marietta, GA |

I don't think the ol' Win on Sunday ... Sell on Monday applies anymore ... I think it is all about name recognition ... People must know these are not the same cars they buy at the dealer anymore.
I think the *shape* of the cars ... bonnet and roof being included are stock ... but the actual bodywork is not. I think they should change the name to the Nextel Factory Prototypes!  Bob. |

The only true parts that I know of that are of "stock" variety are the engine blocks.... but even that is speculative.
The templates are variations of the actual silhouette of the cars... but now that they are not "manufacture exclusive" the only differences seem to be the nose and tail sections... and window shapes... Essentially any drive-train and engine components may have part numbers on it.. but the trick for many years is an aftermarket supplier making the piece (whether suspension or engine part) then the manufacturer allowing a part number and emblem stamp on it... that way non-stock racing components conveniently are now legal stock parts from the manufacturer. In CASCAR, we run fiberglass bodies that are taken right off the mold of an actual stock taurus, intrepid, grand prix or monte carlo. They are exact dimensions, etc. The only REAL area where we have to follow hoever is the center template... if the template from mid-nose to tail down the middle of the car meets the template...then it is legal. other measurements are to keep visual asthetics... Before the "common template" the hood, roof & decklid was stock.
It had to be factory produced skins then. But now only the engine block is a factory production item. Everything that goes into the engine is aftermarket. The Chevy engine is an 1/8" stroked 350. (I think the Chevy 350 is still available in trucks.) The Ford engine is an 1/8" stroked 351 Cleveland. (I think the 351 Cleveland has been out of street production for several years.) The Dodge engine is based on the Chevy engine, Dodge makes the block for racing only. Last edited by Stan_MarlinMan; 31 Jul 2004 at 02:28. |

Well despite all this they still look a hell of a lot more like ordinary cars than the ones the F1 boys drive.
Hey maybe they should start selling street cars that'll do 200mph
