Indeed. Ducati need something better than a couple of those to propel their bicycles along with.

To be fair, the answers given so far are much more interesting than what the real answer is. Unless, of course, you really do think that camshafts are interesting.

Those that don't want to know what a camshaft actually does (and most F1 fans couldn't give a ****** ****) would be well advised not to click on the link below. You have been warned!

I can see why the OP asked the question which I took seriously and answered honestly. A bit of good natured banter after answering his question is fair enough I feel.

The "cam shaft" as opposed to "the shaft" is not what you get in america after a divorce. Don't get so confused.

I doubt there is one member of this forum that doesn't know what a camshaft is, so don't expect any of us to take this question seriously.

Cam was a 15th century Portuguese explorer, who discovered much of the west coast of Africa. He also developed a yoke-like handle for carrying two buckets across the shoulders. Cam's haft was used for centuries to balance loads and increase carrying capability, culminating with the milk-maid. I believe the shape actually inspired a component of the internal combustion engine, although I have no idea which one.

Oh my you over-estimate me!

I've always loved the racing, the drama and the action, but as soon as it gets to the nitty-gritty of the bits that make cars, you know, go, my brian starts fading out to a meadow scene with fluffy bunnies hopping about - until whoever is talking to me asks if I agree, at which point I invariably suggest I don't and they are a fool for thinking that way and then scarper before they can dig any deeper into the obviously sincerely held belief.

Its even more tricky when you do club meets and everyone thinks you must be able to strip an old Allegro down and rebuild it in your sleep. I'd have more chance in my sleep mind...

Hi, I'm the least mechanically minded person you'll ever meet
Until reading the Wiki page the only thing I knew about a camshaft was that it sounded really sexy when Megan Fox said it

Key in ignition - turn key - magic happens - my car moves forward...

My first thought was Ford Crossflow, but the bearings at the bottom are too large, and not enough lobes. That only has 4 - which is odd. A two cylinder motorbike engine perhaps? Or maybe the wax is obscuring some important detail. Like more lobes.

A Camshaft (or Cameron Shaft to give it it's full name) is an unforeseen event or crisis occurring in one's public or professional life whilst sunning oneself on an overseas beach.

This often requires a swift return to the work location to howls of derision from an ungrateful electorate and subsequent need for stiff disciplinary measures.

Can't quite tell; is it a VW of some description - but there just don't seem to be enough lobes on it - is it a DOHC engine with 2 valves/cylinder? I'm afraid I am a bit old school and only deal with Xflows.
