Was that a possibility for Kubica in 2010 to move to Mclaren alongside Hamilton?
I read it somewhere; and it made me think. |

I wonder if there will be an "official" report and film of the "test swap" between Hamilton and Rossi the other day in Spain ?

When Panis broke his leg in 97, the first option to replace him was test driver Emmanuel Collard

After being dropped by Williams, Hill was linked to McLaren, Benetton, Ligier, Jordan, Sauber and Stewart before deciding on Arrows

The rumour mill I always remember was in 04, to see who would take the two Williams seats for 05, with JPM going to McLaren and Ralf to Toyota. In the end it went to Webber and Heidfeld, while Button briefly signed for the team, before CRB made him stay at BAR
The other names in connection, were Rubinho(before he signed an extension with Ferrari), DC, Fisichella, Villeneuve, Davidson, Hakkinen, Scott Dixon, Pizzonia, Gene, Liuzzi, Nico Rosberg, Piquet Jr, Bourdais, Panis and even Jeff Gordon! |

After winning WSR 3.5 in 2010, beating Daniel Ricciardo, Mikhail Aleshin was linked with Force India, Lotus and Virgin(this was the most likely).

Talking about Panis, he could have gone to Benetton in 1996. Instead they choose Berger.
Also Olivier was linked with Jordan in 1996, to drive for them next year, as well as Salo. |

Nico Hülkenberg could be at Virgin in 2011. But he rejected the offer, and instead became a reserve driver.
This resulted a break with his manager Willi Weber. |

Massa was a contender for the second Jordan seat for 2003, before it went to Firman

Glock was originally going to stay with Marussia for 2013, before they replaced him with Razia, who was replaced before the season started with Bianchi
With Hill intending to retire midway through 99, his Jordan team did test Jos the Boss with of a view of him taking Hill's seat, but after the test decided he wasn't the man for the team. There was also talk later on in the season of Heidfeld taking the seat |

Maldonado claims he was close to joining Ferrari for 2014. Don’t know how close though!

Williams asked HHF to take Senna’s empty seat at Williams in 94, but Heinz stayed loyal with Sauber. As a result, that season’s car ended up with his Dad

JJ Lehto had an offer from an F1 team in 1995.
But he refused. It was probably from the Lotus-Pacific. Also he got linked with Sauber when Wendlinger left. |

He had those 2 end of year Sauber drives in '94 but he wasn't right so the results were hardly stellar. JJ wasn't fully race fit again until 1996. His stunning performances in the '97 FIA GT programme out him back on the map to an extent and he couldn't resist the pull of single seaters so went to CART with Hogan. That turned out to be a bit of a disaster. He was quick but there were lots of mechanical issues. Shame he didn't continue in '99 as little doubt he would have done better with a year's settling in under his belt. I did think Lehto might be an outside chance for the first 2 years of the Williams-BMW F1 programme in 2000-01. He certainly could have been the test driver instead of Jorg Muller if he stayed with BMW and not hitched up to Merc for the CART deal. My overriding feeling is that had JJ not broken his neck at the beginning of '94, he would have been a very good no.2 to Schu for a couple of years. His Imola qualy and Spanish drive to a possible 3rd before retirement showed he was quick enough. He was just very unfortunate that year. |

Mansell came close to signing a contract with Ferrari for 87. Apparently he received the contract, but never signed it

Wasn't DeCesaris very much in the frame to replace Arnoux at Ferrari in 85?

I think there were rumours of a swap between the two, with Arnoux ending up at Ligier, which he did do in 86. Also there were rumours he would replace Hesnault at Brabham because he was seen in the Brabham pit in Imola.

In 1982 by C Hilton, it is mentioned that one magazine had 8 drivers linked to Villeneuve’s empty seat, excluding Tambay.
Trying to think who those 8 could be. I guess Andretti would have be one, as he did later take Pironi’s seat of course and Jonesy too, as he was original choice for that seat Others I’ve heard through various sources linked that season are Alboreto, Warwick, Lammers, Keegan and Johansson. That makes 7, although it might not have been all those drivers that were linked |

Jarier, Regazzoni and Jones were all linked to March for 1977.
Also Helmuth Koinigg was close to a full season deal with Surtees for 1975, when his horrible accident happened. I think he is a real forgotten hero. There's a lot of talk about Williamson, Pryce,Cevert, but not a word about him. |
