CANADIAN GP cancelled - reports..
Reports coming out of Canada that the GP is cancelled..
4:29 p.m. | Updated at 4:40 p.m. The Canadian Grand Prix, scheduled for June 13 in Montreal, will not take place. Radio-Canada has learned that the event is canceled for public health reasons. Montreal health officials have concluded that, even behind closed doors, without spectators, the risk of spreading COVID-19 is too high. Quebec public health had given the green light for an event behind closed doors , but under certain conditions. Among them, ensuring that the risks of spread were reduced to a minimum. However, according to our information, Montreal's public health believes that bringing together around 2,500 people on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit represents a risk. First, participants coming from abroad should have been exempted from a mandatory quarantine. Ottawa has remained silent on this issue and has returned the ball to the Montreal public health court, which deems it to be a risk. A risky health bubble Formula 1 offered a sanitary bubble for members of the stables. She planned to rent exclusive hotels, use private transport and do regular testing for the 1,300 people directly linked to F1. However, doubts have been raised about the impermeability of this sanitary bubble. In addition, the presence of about a thousand volunteers outside this bubble, but in frequent contact with the participants in the race, was a problem. Faced with all these pitfalls, Montreal public health believes that it is better to cancel the race What future? The cancellation of the Grand Prix for a second year in a row raises doubts about the event's survival. The contract provides for the race to be held until 2029, but some, with Prime Minister François Legault in the lead, fear that the cancellations will be considered a breach of contract by F1. According to our information, the Government of Quebec is continuing discussions to ensure the presentation of the event over the next few years. |

Can't imagine the government and medical people approving the travel of that many directly from another race. If F1 brought EVERYTHING needed maybe, but the local support is still crucial and will require them follow the current 2 week quarantine rules. Does not appear the rules will change that soon, been following some of the discussion as part of the MLB season and the Toronto team playing in Florida currently and Buffalo, NY later in the season.

this line is definitely some regional politics at play. anyways, sad that it is cancelled and i think it would be poor form for FOM to cancel their contract for non compliance. Monty will be back! |

We'll wait for the official announcement, but the signs of this race going ahead aren't great atm. Already Turkey is being lined up as a replacement.
Would be a massive shame if this race doesn't go ahead for a second year running, I've always enjoyed this GP and always have had a soft spot for Canada having been there twice (and both times got driven round the track!). It's definitely one I would miss not being on the calendar At least Monaco is going ahead. And I do agree with Bella's sentiments, let's wait and see where we are in a few months before declaring others won't go ahead |

I would be shocked if the temporary loss of the race for Covid related reasons led to Liberty terminating the contract. They,of all organisations, have been seeking to run more races in North America and in Montreal they have an established and popular venue. It would be absurd to take any action that led to the loss of such an event.Similarly it would be unwise to insist that this year's race goes ahead if the regional authorities are fearful of an event that might add to the number of Covid sufferers. As I understand the situation there is a subsidy given to allow the event to occur and the healthcare system in Canada has a substantial element of public funding so hosting the race could cost them on two fronts.
Could they not do as the ACO have done and move the date back to give the pandemic a chance to be brought under control? |

Yes it has gone from 6000 new cases per day just over a month ago prompting the removal of a partial lockdown.... in the last month since the partial lockdown was removed it has become Covid central in Europe with currently 60,000 new cases daily. This has resulted in a full lockdown being enforced to combat the surge.

Turkey looks DIW.
Perhaps we should change the thread title to: Next GP to be canceled. |

What's more, there will be no exceptions to quarantine for people arriving in red list countries, so that's another stumbling block to the GP

If only they didn’t keep Saudi and Abu Dhabi, it wouldn’t be so bad

Mods, can this thread be renamed or merged with the Future Races thread? We keep on having things in this one which aren't pertinent to the thread subject.

Done.
The COVID GP venue news thread: https://tentenths.com/forum/showthre...ighlight=COVID This one can remain just Canada. Enough users and specific interest in that. Probably could do the same with Australia, but hey ho. Could have merged all., but meh. The new GP more general thread. For things like Miami. https://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=132358 Last edited by Adam43; 15 May 2021 at 13:04. |
