R3 pushed forwards, looks like Butcher and Edwards will make it on the grid.

And most drivers aren't stupid, why would you slow yourself down fighting with a much faster car and losing touch or falling back with who you are actually racing?

Looking forward to race 3. Jelley hasn’t quite had the rub of the green in the first two races, let’s hope he makes the most of his pole position. And now seeing the rain come down, that’s gonna throw another spanner in the works

Jake Hill leading the championship, well deserved!

Good to see Lloyd salvage something too.

Well that was a race, plenty of overtaking and some great driving, Plato on the podium a real surprise.

What a great season opener! Ash is clearly head and shoulders above at the moment, I just hope he doesn't completely run away with it.

There's a lot of very good drivers and machines at the sharp end - could be one of the most competitive ever. Good to see JP back and scoring well.

Quite dissapointing weekend for BMW.
And, apart from the starts, Colin did not overtake a single car. Worrying ...

Great opener to the season. It looks like there are plenty of competitive drivers to compete for race wins and maybe the championship. Alongside the usual contenders, it seems like Plato and Shedden are both forces to be reckoned with again (though we didn't really see the best of Shedden) and plenty of drivers are getting their taste of the front: Rowbottom, Jelley and Lloyd might all be in the mix for podiums and wins as the season trundles on.

It might be sorting out teething issues with the new car but hopefully Team HARD can be fighting for top 10s this year rather than making up numbers like they did with the aged Passat.

All in all, a competitive grid with exciting action throughout. Hard to bet against Sutton as favourite again after today's display but I think Cook, Turkington, Ingram and Hill will make his life pretty difficult.

Any confirmation via telemetry than Neate had a mechanical failure?

There are no penalties showing so it's either not been investigated yet or it was a mechanical.

Driver of the Day?

Ash Sutton wins it for me for some outstanding drives through the order, with Josh Cook a close second for those two wins.

Honourable mentions also to Jake Hill, Jason Plato, Dan Cammish, Tom Ingram Jack Goff and Daniel Rowbottom.

Exactly. Another season of Sutton carving his way through the field without a challenge and Timbo having a crisis about it doesn't excite me.

jake hill. excellent consistency, and fair play for not chucking it off in desperation towards the end of race 3. the lad’s got a feel for where the grip is matched only by sutton himself, imo.

notable mentions to josh cook cause he still won two out of three races, chris smiley for that epic drift in race 3 and everyone who managed to put a car back together quickly after a shunt on raceday. you don’t have a small accident at thruxton.

Enjoyed that. Some scary and expensive looking crashes though. I hope that poor old team HARD can put that car back together.

Cook and Sutton were brilliant. Returning Shedden and Plato both on the pace.

Which he probably has down the back of his sofa. That's not going to bring a £300k racecar back.

TBH with this places negativity toward the BTCC as a whole, and for some reason thinking people let Sutton by and he isn't fully deserving of his hard won successes, it actually seems there's one forum on every BTCC discussion that stands out amongst the crowd...

Absolutely fantastic racing all day long from Thruxton though, what a brilliant idea to not start the season at the tight confines of Brands Indy and let them stretch their legs on the straights of Thruxton

F4 and ginettas particularly good, but BTCC Race 3 in the wet/dry was sublime
I'm sure some here will say the conditions made sure he "lucked" into the win, but I'm not sure exactly what Sutton did wrong this weekend
Biffed out of the way by Turkington in race 1, dragging himself through the field to get into a position to win Race 3 and certainly the greatest overtaker in a grid full of great overtakers.

Only a shame it's another month to the next race, and the track isn't quite as good. But can't wait for more
