This race, in recent years anyway, has a history of being close until near the end. I don't see any reason to expect it to be any different this year. Looks like lots of good teams with good cars with good drivers. Should be a fun kick-off to the season.

From EI:"All cars running at minimum weight of 2225 pounds, excluding motor DP Porsche whose weight can not be less than 2275 pounds."

As you can see Porsche do not have a 50Lb weight advantage but rather a 50Lb weight penalty!

They had a 50lbs weight break with the old 3.8 engine, though. And they could have kept that one and been done with it. As the switch happens exactly when Porsche enters the series with a semi-factory-team, I'm pretty sure that this change was initiated by Porsche...

Nope. From the GA-website:

Quote:
PORSCHE 3.99L GT3R Flat 6
Up to 3.99 liter displacement with unlimited components. Engine to Transaxle adaptor with 1 to 1 ratio allowed approved supplier TBA. Maximum RPM: 9200. Maximum fuel pressure 5.2 bar (75.4 psi) Cars electing to use this engine must weigh 2275 lbs.
3.8 liter displacement with unlimited components. Engine to transaxle adaptor with 1 to 1 ratio allowed, approved supplier TBA. Maximum fuel pressure 5.2
bar (75.4 psi). Eligibility of 3.8 liter engine expires 2/01/2009.
The 3.8l-engine can be used one last time in the 24hrs and as I understand it with the old weight...

I meant that Brumos is not a "semi-factory" team and they have to abide by the same regulations.

Yeah, but that's not the point I was making. The penalty isn't for Penske being a semi-factory-team, but for Porsche bringing in a new engine, which is probably more powerful than the old one.
Porsche could have stayed with the old engine and be done with that, but they choose to bring the new one despite the weight penalty.

Actually The reason is because of the capacity of the new engine.
From the rules:
SECTION 3 - WEIGHT
3-1 Minimum Weight - Minimum car weight, per engine displacement, less fuel and driver race
ready.
Minimum weight for cars 4.0 liters or more, 2275 lbs
Minimum weight for cars under 4.0 liters, 2225 lbs
3-1.1 Grand-Am reserves the right to adjust the weight of any car.
3-1.2 The use of titanium is prohibited except for engine valves and valve spring retainers.
3-1.3 The use of magnesium is prohibited.

you see spyderman.if you a 3.8L engine your car weights 2225llbs and with a 4.0L engine you car weights 2275lbs unless Grand am changes it's mind.my main point is that grand am has it's rules, but also wants close competion,so it will change them if necessary.the cayenne V8 is now allowed to run more rpm(it has increased from 7000 to 7300rpm).and spyderman I'm not like your brielga and arakis,i have nothing against porsche.i'm also very interested in the porsche GT3 vs mazda RX8 battle.porsche has worked on the car it's suspension, weight balance and it's has more horsepower.it should be much more tire friendly, more stable on hard braking.saturday will see if those improvements work.

It’s good to see that you’re not one of those rabid Porsche haters.
Just trying to get to the real reasons and facts behind the story.

As for the GT battle: Very interesting indeed, but still as you know, the Mazda’s are stage 2 cars and the Porsche’s are not.

Hey, anyone else notice that the Gainsco car has actual headlights and not just a sticker with a hole in it and 1 light sticking out of the whole?? It makes the car look like 10x better.

Running joke. Whoever is quickest I call a cheater. Seems fair to me.

First session over. MSR and Penske in P2 and P3 both managed 1:41.2s. T&S was acting a little funny with driver ID, but I believe that was Valiante and Briscoe respectively.

You right on the issue of rx8 being stage 2.altough they are disappointed that can not use the new front dive planes, porsche feels very strongly that they can be comptitive against the rx8.but i think that it will be difficult for them.

It still has that grille sticker, though, doesn't it? (Hope they don't put that "headlamp surround" on again. It does look much better without it. But still, a pig with lipstick, sorry)

The Lexus motor does not look like the ticket on outright pace this year. Bottom of the top 10, with the Porsche and Ford motors looking right on the money. No surprise there, really!

Donohue (Brumos) on pole in front of Bernhard (Penske), Valiante (Shank/Ford), and Zonta (Krohn) in the best non-Riley.

Looks like David Donahue (Porsche): first, Timo Bernhard (Porsche): 2nd and Michael Valiante (Ford): Third. No Pontiac until 11th, slowest of the engine choices.
