The FIA's proposed 2 car rule
How much will this proposed rule which states that only 2 cars per team can score points in the Manufacturers Championship affect the WRC?
Apparently Simon Jean-Joseph is likely to lose his Citroen ride http://www.worldrallynews.com/cgi-bi...2662974,89045, and Peugeot may consider applying team orders (to Loix you would assume) http://www.worldrallynews.com/cgi-bi...2672662,62870, What other possible ramafications are there? Edit: Also what does anyone make of this? According to the second of the articles above: Quote:

When I'm at the rally I like seeing lots of world rally cars fly past. If I want to see 30 Grp N Mitsi's I will go to a domestic rally.
The more the merrier. |

Well in theory, you can still see WRC cars - just not so many works entries.
I wonder if we will see some factory support for private entered WRC cars, now the teams can't run these guys as a third driver? After all, Panizzi did a quite a few gravel rallies in private Peugeot 206's when other drivers were selected for the works cars. Was Peugeot paying some of the bills for those drives? Also at http://www.wrc.com/en_GB/News/2003/0...calchanges.htm
Could be interesting at Citroen especially as they already have two contracted drivers; Loeb and John-Joseph. I'm sure it won't come to it, but if they can't get out of the JJ contract then Sainz and McRae will be down the road for 2004. I wonder if as Alfasud says, it will lead to more semi-works Bozian Peugeot type efforts? The works Peugeot team will now have to decide whether to dump Harri in favour of a tarmac specialist / Loix split programme, and Subaru were already talking about a third non-manufacturer car for either Sainz or McRae if the funding was there. I think this may turn out to be a sad day for the WRC, particularly if the new manufacturers that are promised/hoped for do not sign up for 2005 onwards.

Can non-works cars still score points for the manufacturer if so I see alot of 'satallite' teams with unoffical support emerging next year. You wonder if the FIA is run by muppets or if I'm insulting Kermit. The rules contradict when the teams want as does the calender. With three cars the drivers would fight it out more even between themselves in terms of there respective teams to get the full season and also because the team could allow ofr one car to go off without damaging their points situation. It's not as if this will save teams money in any realisic terms, if at all. The FIA seem set this year on alienating just about everyone and not just in rallying.

Citroen are known to be against 3 car teams, I'd be suprised if they keep John-Joseph as their 2nd driver next year, with all due respect I reckon Citroen will be wanting a more established star.
Don't forget Sainz has the Telefonica backing. |

And they want even shorter rallies, what next? I day sprint events using only 2 - 3 different stages driven 3 times? More stupid accidents than that of Grönholm in Australia, because roads wearing too much.

Well the new rules have not gone down well with Dave Richards http://www.worldrallynews.com/cgi-bi...3180054,79632,
It'll be interesting if ISC decide the reduced spectacle is not worth the cost of coverage..... |

Maybe what the FIA need to do now is have a Team Championship title which would allow more than one team to run a particular model, in addition to the Manufacturers (like the BTCC currently)

From www.wrc.com
"The question of 'B' teams is not constitutionally a goer now, but there is nothing to say that is not possible in the future," said the WRC Commission President . "I wouldn't see any reason why there couldn't be a Total Peugeot Team and then an Esso Peugeot Team." |

Haven't read the story yet but in todays Autosport it says Peugeot and Citroen are not for dumping their third drivers.
They could maybe lend them out to some of the higher privateer teams in the WRC or there's no rules against running three cars in one team is there - it's just that only 2 nominated cars can score ? |

From www.worldrallynews.com
Mitsubishi Motor Sports chief Sven Quandt has condemned new World Rally Championship regulations that he believes will damage the prospects for young drivers. “I thought the idea of having a third driver who had never been on the podium was a good idea. This gives only older drivers a chance,” Quandt said. |
