Seemed like the biggest crowd at SMP since the A1GP events. Quality support races probably helped.

Because in 2007 the category was pushing the NSW State Government to ditch Eastern Creek and move the event to Homebush. 29,530 was a bad crowd because it had to be, it helped push the agenda for Homebush

In 2018 33,000 is a roaring success because the extra 4000 people help push the agenda for night racing, and helps the category sell an image that this new format is a raging success and Sydney loves Supercars etc etc...

ie... they spin any crowd number good or bad to push any agenda

Did they need Sunday in 2007? The main event was run on the Monday that year wasn't it?

You should be proud of such pedantry.

The entire crowd was basically through Friday/Saturday - rather than Saturday/Sunday/Monday or whatever.

Ex Supercars CEO James Warburton has let slip that the crowd on Saturday was 21,220, a long way from the 33,000 quoted by others.

Maybe as an ex executive he had access to the real figures.

Always pays to scratch the surface with Supercars and their press releases.

A few comments from spectators suggest that access to the spectator mounds were limited to the front straight, turn 1 and 2 (inclusive of pit building/skid pan). No doubt to reduce spectator lighting needed but also helps bunch people together for tv cameras.

According to Autosport the crowd was 22000 on Saturday, still pretty good for Sydney. Go back to 2003 when SMP was the final Round of the Series and check out the crowd though.

That would indicate there were 12,000 spectators there on Friday.

That is more than half of Saturday’s crowd. This is very unlikely given it was a workday. Also i watched Friday’s TV and don’t believe it to be the case.

Friday was full of more school kids than you could poke sticks at.
I would have thought the numbers were about right at half.

No doubt the school kids got the tickets for free

So out of the 33,000 , how many paid for their tickets? (ie... did Supercars Events make money out of the exercise?)

21,000 puts a different view on things compared to the releases making it sound like 33,000 watched the race

Seems to be the norm at SMP but not a bad move if those kids are getting in free. Beats sitting behind a desk and if gets just some of those kids interested in motorsport then it’s well worth it.

Hopefully I make it back next year to SMP.

It's normal at the Silverstone 24 hours to restrict spectators from certain areas overnight. I guess the risk of someone having an accident in the dark and not being found is greater. H&S and all that. And as you say, it saves having to provide lighting to those areas.

This is why we shouldn't judge Supercars "success" based on crowd numbers..........we should judge it based on manufacturer interest..........................................

I love ex CEO James Warburton's press release so much I will quote one paragraph in full:

"A bumper 21,220 crowd flocked to the circuit overshadowing the two NRL games in the city that clashed with the race on Saturday night"

The numbers are correct but I will put it in perspective for those not familiar with the NRL

There was a total of 15,879 at the two games.

BUT the opposition in both games were from Queensland (being North Queensland and Gold Coast) and their fans don't travel to Sydney, and they have little Sydney support.

One of the Sydney sides was Parramatta and they are fighting for the wooden spoon. There game only drew 6,158.

So Warburton's statement is a mastery of spin, which we should be used to with Supercars.

If they beat AFL it would be a different story, NRL has never really had huge attendance at grounds.

So Warburton put out a press release about his former company? That's pretty unusual - had a look and couldn't find it, could you please give us a link Terry?

You mention that the release is a mastery of spin, "which we should be used to with Supercars" but Warburton isn't from Supercars so I'm not sure what the point is?

You're right about 2 of the NRL games featuring interstate teams, however it should be pointed out that ALL of the Supercar teams are from interstate so again, I'm not sure what the point is?

Using those NRL numbers - the last 10 Eastern Creek v8 rounds would have beaten the NRL crowds in Sydney.

You could be right (or not) but I'm still surprised at a former CEO issuing a press release about an event run by his former company.

I think it's great that the event seemed to work & grab some imagination, along with plenty of raves from those that attended and watched on TV. It may just be that the night time aspect really suits SMP and the lifestyle / time availability of people in the area. If it keeps going and growing in future years, so much the better.
