Hi Peter.

I see that Jonathon has finally signed you up then!

Absolutely, the Essex boys knew their stuff back then and they all wanted to beat Doc Merfield by any means possible.

I must have attended the 27 September meeting as dad used to gofor for David Brown who was 2nd reserve in his Triumph Vitesse that day. Poor old David was not the fastest driver around and would have probably struggled to keep up with the Saab.

Yes. The split adjusted a few years later to fall in with the appendix J classes os up to 850, 851 to 1000, 1001 to 1300, and for club racing over 1300. There were also wheel rim limits for classes and over 2lts were allowed 10" rims, hence Dave Brodie(?) claimed to use a 2040 cc Escort. The rule was done away with at the start of 1971 iirc.

BMC racing saloon drivers info sought

Junior Senior,
Following on from your thread of Feb 2003 re A40.I was that man! I am,however, currently researching all drivers of BMC produced cars for a forthcoming book and am keen to know details of the following A40 drivers who raced 'in period'.
P.C.Banks,Graham Birrell,(Grubby),Mick Cave,Dennis Clarke,Harry Digby,Mike Lawlor,Edward Lewis(Westover shoes),Phillip Middlehurst,Francis Pound,Geoff Williamson(Alexander)and Jonathan Williams.
In addition A35 racers of interest are Len Adams(Speedwell),Hubert Cutler,Bill Graham(Speedwell),Phil Shanks(Speedwell),Arthur Taylor(Cambridge University Auto Club Team) believed living somewhere in Glos, and Tony Todd.
A mix of Morris Minor,Riley 1.5,MG Magnette and A90 Westminster drivers include Fred Marriott,Capt Jim Mackreth,Roy North,Peter Pilsworth,Pearce Pope,Alan Hutcheson, believed died in Spain in 2008, Jonathan Wingfield and Alan Adler.
Whilst I appreciate some of the foregoing may no longer be with us any info or contact details including any descendents would be of help.

This is a total long-shot, but I believe Historic Lotus Racer Andy Middlehurst's dad's name is Philip and had some sort of motorsport background...

Just had a scroll through this. Probably the best known A40 Farina raced in Australia was the Leeton Motors car driven by Brian Foley. Ran mostly in 948cc form as I recal and was quite competitve with the Morris minors of various ilks but was soon was rendered obsolescent by the advent of 1100 and 1275 minis.
Was a sort of buttercup cream cour with a black roof and a couple of black race stripes, the Leeton Motors colours.

I remember another A.40 driver from my early racing days. PETER CARTLIDGE. Anyone recall Peter?
If his name has been mentioned before in this post, sorry.

If the Fred Marriot Old A40 Racer mentions, is the one I remember doing Sprints in the sixties, he passed away many years ago - one of his sons (Derry) took over his garage at Nutfield. Don't know if it is still there.

I got here eventualy

Hi, back in the 60's I spectated at many race meetings, always a BMC fan (my Brother was Ford) a great fan of Mick Cave. I was at Brands when Chris Airey passed away and have numerous old photos of A40's including his plus the Ogontune car that followed. Somewhere in the cobwebs of my brain are lots of memories so if I can help in any way let me know.

Hi, I spectated a lot in the early sixties and can still recall some details, Francis Pound was the first I think to race a Mk2 A40 and stuck a streamlined? nose on his car. Somewhere I had a photo of it. There was another chap called Martin Mulcrone who raced a 1650 Ford engined car, bronze with a blue roof I think. Crashed it at Paddock and the remains were rebuilt by a guy, can't remember his name but it was painted green and I spoke to him at Silverstone and got the history.

The name Mulchrone rings a bell, i'm sure he had a big engined Capri at one point? Maybe late 70's or early 80's. I'm sure I saw his name in a Thruxton programme for one of those end of season tv races that used to be held in November?

Blue Mk 1 A40

Hi all. New on the forum. Re A40s. My brother bought a Blue Mk 1 A40 from a bloke call Bill Shear (I think) in about 1965. I was a track car, totally stripped out, viciously lowered, front wheels akimbo, hellish fast (120mph) and very noisy. We saw it run in a sprint at Debden Airfield one year (prob 63 or 4)- the year Allard run the first UK dragster. My brother used it for local rallies in Essex, and he even taught Barry Lee to rally navigate (he wasn't very good). Anybody know any more about it?

Found my old photos.

Hi all, I found my old photos the other day and if I can find out how to do it will post them, they include Francis Pound's with and without strealined nose, Chris Airey's cars, the first one with megaphone exhaust and the next years without and sadly last and the ogontune car that followed. If they don't load and you wish to view post me some contact details and I will send them. Don't forget these were early sixties, I was sixteen and only had a halena camera

Came across a video yesterday, which includes 'Chequered Flag' tv show c.1992. It seems to be the race you mention at Brands :
Red/white A40 driven by Dave Bridger is struck by blue/white Anglia driven
by Pete Ergis (not sure about spelling).
A second A40, green, is also in the race, driver : Clive Reader.

You had a great race Gordon, especially battling with Bob Sherring's Galaxie!

Yes that was the one,
The great shame that weekend for me was that I had a problem with the engine the week before and was running a "rubber standby" engine that was way down on power for that televised meeting

WELLSEY A40 FAN should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Hi all, I am still around and see my pics got there, unfortunately they were converted as Adobe files but at least they are there.
Just got some info to share, maybe its known already but here it is. I first went to Brands Hatch in the early 1960s, maybe 1960, and 2 things made a impact on me, firstly I saw Les Leston's Lotus Elite which became my favorite make of car (still look beautiful today), that's a preamble.
I saw my first saloon car race, I was at Druids and from there you could see the top straight braking area for Paddock bend, then the trees before the cars came back in view at druids. There was a 3 car dice for the lead, and as the cars started their last lap the order was on the straight light blue A40 (F Williams) maroon Anglia (John Young) and black A40 (Johnathan Williams). When they arrived at Druids the order had reversed black A40, Anglia and blue A40 which was the race result, my love of the A40 was born.
I had always wondered if the F Williams was the now famous Frank of F1 Team fame and while researching Dave Brodie's book it was confirmed that it was.
Now here's the interesting thing to me, maybe it's already known but he sold his blue A40 to one Chris Airey.
