Formula Abarth
This New Championship (actually replacing Formula Azzurra has been attracting a lot of Teams lately. Here is some information about it: Chassis: TATUUS FA010 monocoque Homologated FIA F.3 (Carbon Composite) Bodywork: Carbon Fiber Engine: FPT 414TF 1400cc. turbo - 180 hp Electronics: MAGNETI MARELLI ECU and Data acquisition Transmission: SADEV, sequential 6 speed gearbox Tyres: Kumho Weight: 550 kg including driver 7 Race weekends (together with Italian F3) with 2 races of 23 minutes & 1 lap Open to drivers from 15 to 19 years old. 1st: 50.000€ Prize Money 2nd:1 free engine and 2sets of tyres per race for Italian F3 3rd: 2sets of tyres per race & free registration to Italian F3 Teams who have already announced their participation: Alan Racing: Gilles Pagani - Matteo Torta Tomcat: Emmebi Motorsport: AP Motorsport: TJ Emme: Kevin D'Amico RC Motorsport: FOG Competition: Corbetta: JD: Some of these Teams come from Formula Renault 2.0. This would probably suggest that Formula Abarth will compete against Formula Renault 2.0 and probably against F.Bmw (although F.Bmw has the F1 context which seems unbeatable to the eyes of some drivers). Budgets are supposed to be quite interesting although I have no idea of any figures and one race may even take place in Europe. Personally I think the car looks really nice, much better than F.Bmw and even the new F.Renault |

Great, even more single seater Balkanization.
How long has Formula Azzura been going? Why replace it now? Last edited by duke_toaster; 21 Nov 2009 at 20:31. Reason: Misread, thought it was an entire F3 car with other engine |

Well I wouldn't consider it a new Championship. It's just the Formula Azzurra changing name and car.
Of course we don't need more Championships. But if this what they say cheaper, better and new, then why not... It just seems that most Italian Formula Renault Teams are switching to that Championship rather than continuing in Formula Renault with the new car... |

FPT means Fiat Powertrain. That engine is used in the Abarth road cars. Together with it being an Italian F3 support series and Abarth and Magnetti Marelli having their names there, we can easily deduce that the Fiat group is putting some money in the championship. duke, not only Renault and Ford have the right to promote karting drivers. For example, the Volkswagen group has a similar championship in Germany (Formel Masters). |

Surely the best solution to that would be bringing in a non-spec series, using cheap and affordable parts that are commonly available. Perhaps something akin to SCCA Formula 1000, possibly with a carbon monocoque instead of a space-frame. Cheap and plentiful motorbike engines. The FIA would need to throw their weight behind it somewhat, but there could be ways of doing that.

More interest in the series from Teams:
Strange to see Motopark in the list though since all others are Italian Teams... http://"http://www.italiaracing.net/...=25629&cat=31" |

Motopark and Jenzer left Eurocup because of the new regs, now Abarth is seen as a strong competitor, so it's no surprising Motopark have chosen to enter Abarth.
Also there's talk that Abarth will take FBMW's place in F1 weekends from 2011. Next year will be very hard for youngster to choose their route in Europe, new cars from FR2.0 and Abarth, rumours around FBMW... it will be a big gamble. Apparently FIAT are serious in promoting their categories and with these 3 days of young driver testing, they can tie them up with Ferrari. |

Won't this new championship kill off Italian FR? It already had very small grids this year compared to the past few seasons.

It's not new, it's a rennovation of an existing champioship. Actually since both championships are getting new cars in 2010 it is a good chance to see who got right and who got it wrong.

Partnering with GT Sport (GT Open, Auto GP, F3 Open) really would make sense for... Fiat. As suggested, I'd keep this expanded second Formula Abarth championship in the Mediterrean to keep costs down: Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and period. In other words, German, British and Belgian circuits should be added only in later seasons.

It's not like they have much of a choice if BMW continue as F1 support anyway, it's either DTM, WTCC or F3 Open. Out of those they can only tie it with FPT engines in F3 Open. It would be interesting to see if the 500 Cup will also join the package, if so the F3 Open package will be an excellent line up of series.

Alan Racing: Gilles Pagani - Matteo Torta
Tomcat: Emmebi Motorsport: AP Motorsport: TJ Emme: Kevin D'Amico RC Motorsport: FOG Competition: Corbetta: JD: BVM Target: Mac Competition: Prema: Motopark: MG Motorsport: Mirko Torsellini Update with all Teams who seem to enter F.Abarth. Some good teams in there... but most of them are small teams for now. Some young drivers tested recently in view of entering the new championship in 2010: Raffaele Marciello, Kevin Ludi, Maxim Zimin, Riccardo Agostini,Matteo Beretta. Most of them come from karting. |

It looks very similar to 2004 aero spec. Tatuus FR2000 (and Japanese Formula Challenge Tatuus FC106).

The ex Spanish F3 had in 2009 only half of its races in Spain. I wonder whether GT Sport will attempt create an Iberian Formula Abarth, to cover the lower level formula racing in Spain and Portugal. It could race alongside the Iberian GT Championship.

I have the feeling FIAT/Abarth/FPT/whateveryouwant are targeting FR2.0 like scheme, championships in the most important countries and then a Eurocup. So may be they would do Italian and Iberian championship, then Eurocup in place of FBMW EU.

I'm guessing that its hurting Formula Renault 2.0 at the moment more than F.Bmw. F.Bmw still has the F1 appeal... most of the teams announced are ex F.Renault teams (mostly from the italian championship). It should be interesting to see how it develops.

I believe that the European and Asian F-BMW championships are in danger, because BMW is focusing on road-based racing cars, and the F-BMW Americas is already dead.
The F2 is Audi-powered and the ADAC Formel Masters (VW engines) is growing, so I guess that the GT Sport package has better chances to get the Mediterranean / European F-Abarth. Alonso being in Ferrari might have a role in the expansion too - more young Spaniards will want to follow him and an F-Abarth would surely attract lots of drivers. |

I have Riccardo Agostini on facebook and he has uploaded these photos. Not sure if it is Abarth, but looks quite similar to Formula Renault. I will let you guys decipher!
